I am forwarding this letter, in anticipation of Kathy's response to anything I have said that is inaccurate. I want to clarify that it is not our intention to "bash" any doctor that is on our side and is helping us. God knows that we have few enough good doctors as it is. I believe that Dr. Melmed is a compassionate man and has very, very good intentions, and has stuck his neck out for us on many occassions. Clearly, he is a man of ethics and good conscience.

I also want to make sure that women are getting good information. It appears that there are quite a few of us who have a different understanding about the capsule issue. My understanding is that every effort should be made to remove the capsule, because residual capsules can be deleterious to health. I also understand that there are cases where removing all pieces of the capsule can be risky, due to excessive bleeding, or other complications. The whole point of contention is in what is listed as fact, versus what is truly possible.

I'll post Kathy's reply as soon as I get it!

It is not my intention to bash Dr. Melmed, and I very plainly stated in my post that I do not want to oppose him. I believe that Dr. Melmed has very good intentions and he is very compassionate toward the women who need help in most cases. (I have heard from one woman that needed explant desperately, and he refused her.)

My concern is that in the statements that he lists as FACT. I am not a doctor, so I cannot say that my statements are fact either, but if I am in error and am making inaccurate statements, would you be so kind as to show me where this error is? My efforts to clarify what was said were to allow the women to get the proper explant, and my understanding of this is that all efforts must be made to remove the capsule.

I believe it was wrong for Dr. Melmed to state "It is not possible to remove all of the capsule when implants are under the muscle." If that is so, then my plastic surgeon, Dr. Karl Hiatt, has done the impossible. So have many other doctors. This statement needed to be opposed, based on truth.

As I said, I do not wish to oppose any doctor on our side. I just want to make sure women are being told the truth, and call an inaccurate statement what it is.

Please clarify my inaccurate statements for me, so that I can be better informed. Once I receive your reply, I will be glad to post your letter to the benefit of all.

It's hard not to be emotional about this issue, given all the suffering we have been through, and knowing how other women are experiencing the same. It's also hard to know exactly what is the "right" choice when it comes to how to deal with our healing-- we are all racking our brains, scouring the net, researching and trying to understand the research. The fact that there is still no conclusive evidence that points to exactly what it is about implants that makes women sick make this all the more confusing.

I do agree with Kathy-- that it's important not to broadbrush doctors who have helped many women and could potentially help more. An open dialogue about this issue seems healthy, but accusatory language seems extreme to me. This is just my opinion.

That said, I consider you a true heroine, for all the patient work and advocacy you have offered and continue to offer to women in need.

I appreciate your kind comments. My biggest hope is that someday we have answers to all of our questions, and we can know why women are getting sick, what is needed to help us heal, and we can all have access in every state to knowledgeable doctors on proper explant for healing. It shouldn't be that tall of an order to expect, should it, given the millions upon millions of dollars they have made off of us? Bindi, you are also a heroine, taking part in this collossal effort to help other women get better!
