Hi ,

You will probably get a lot of answers to this one. When I was diagnosed, I

was overweight and had not lost any. I was put on Glyburide, and my weight

stayed the same. I may have gained a few lbs. After being on meds for about

a year, I was determined to come off them. I started exercising more and cut

down on portion sizes. When I did this, I started losing about 2 lbs per

week. It took me about 9 months to lose down to my present weight. After

losing about 25 lbs, I did come off the medications. I have been at my

present weight for several months. I'm not gaining or losing.

I think weight loss can be one of the symptoms to let

you know you might have diabetes, but like other

things it doesn't necessarily have to be a symptom.

For me, I did loose weight.

Unfortunately, and this goes for all types of diabetics, once you get

your blood sugars under control, with medications or insulin, it

becomes difficult to lose weight. In fact, with better glycemic

control it's not unusual to GAIN weight. This is where balancing

diet, excercize, and medication plays a big role. Too much food

always leads to weight gain, and so can too much medication (i.e.

constantly " feeding " lows).

Weight loss is most commonly assoiciated with type 1 diabetics upon

diagnoses, and often it's quite dramatic, but it isn't as much so

with type 2, although it is very possible. When I was diagnosed

(with type 1) I found myself eating EVERYTHING I could, and not

gaining anything, while I was pregnant, so we knew something was up.
