You do not need to live with it, and should NOT allow it to continue. First, try Miralax. It is now available over the counter, although I still have my doctor write a prescription for the prescription version, because my copay is less than paying OTC and my insurance still covers it. It is not a typical laxative. It is safe to take everyday/long term, which is not true of some OTC laxatives. It does not cause bloating or cramping like other laxatives either, and it is MUCH more effective. If it doesn't work, talk to your doctor about other options. Don't be embarrassed - everyone who takes an opiate has to deal with this. It's the one side effect that never goes away. There are other prescription options available. Also, add " Power Pudding " into your daily routine. Here's the recipe: 1/4 C bran (can use " All Bran " cereal) 1/4 C applesauce 1/4 C prune juice (I think they call it " plum juice " now!) Mix thoroughly and store in the refrigerator. Eat 1 heaping tablespoon a day to start - increase the " dose " as needed. Can also season with ginger or cinnamon or whatever other spices you like. Hope these suggestions help. Cheryl in AZ Moderator
Guest guest
I also take opiates for pain and have the double whammy of damage to the nerves which control the sphincter muscles. Cheryl suggestions are good. I take two 250 mg Magnesium tablets daily which seems to help me. You will just have to play with the amounts and " dial-in " how your body works. There may come a day when you won't be able to stray to far from home, if you get my drift. in ville
