They weren't particularly uncomfortable and found problems that the MRIs and X-rays had completely missed. Both my myelograms were done by the same highly qualified Dr. of Radiology. I did end up with a nasty headache after my second myelogram and had to spend the night in the hospital. I'm one of those people who has a headache almost constantly, so getting some more headache on top of it wasn't a surprise.:-) Lyndi

In fact I watched on the moniter. It was very interesting. Be sure to lie down for a while afterwards so you don't get a headache. I had no problems at all. It helped a lot to find out more info than what the MRI showed. Sojo
Guest guest
Hi I was already in the hospital when I had mine done. Some folks go through it beautifully, but not me. And I didnt get the spinal headache, which I think I was spared because of the horrible experience in Radiology. Next time,if ever, which I hope to NEVER have another one, I will demand Versed or something so I don't remember it, or feel anything, but it keeps me awake so I can answer questions. Hope this helps! I will pray you have a non-painful experience. Vicki in TX --- Kathy21 wrote: >I'm scheduled for a myelogram in a few days. Guest guest
I am supposed to have one. hubby says to risky with the headache and I have a real issue with staying still long enough. Denene
Guest guest
You will stay still long enough. They just don't throw you on the table and let it start, They will keep you under enough so that the regular pain and the pain you are going through while they are doing the test, is stand able, I'm sure you have had worse things done. Sounds like you need it. Guest guest
My husband was a nurse for many years and have also other issues with it that he is concerned about for me so he won't let me do it. I am NOT going against my husband's wishes. Right now he has no job again so we can't afford it but they wanted me to do this before all this other stuff happened with his job. We are now living on very little income till he can find another job. Denene Ronpat wrote: .. Sounds like you need it. Guest guest
I want to let everyone know that I had my myelogram last Tuesday, 12/30. It wasn't bad at all. The radiologist was wonderful - very patient and careful. I had a spinal tap, myelogram and CT scan. It all took about an hour once we got the doctor's orders straightened out and got started. I stayed in the nurses' area for about 3 hours and then went home & stayed down for about 24 hours. I was really blessed - no pain, no headache at all. Thanks KD
Guest guest
My husband had one at the beginning of December due to neck problems. He was worse after the myelogram than before. The test literally beat him up. He just had surgery 12/30 but should have had it sooner. Our neighbor said that her doctor had her take the test on one day and have the surgery immediately the next day. Not to scare you but it's a brutal painful test. I hope you have a caring doctor who will adequately treat your pain following the test. Robyn
Guest guest
Its really weird how different people have different responses to myelograms. About 3 months ago I had my 4th during about 40 years. None of mine have been rough, and 2 of them pinpointed the trouble right away and I also had the surgery the next day. The last two they let me go home after 4 hours. To me about the worst test to have is the diskagram. They really hurt like heck. And each vertebra hurts till they get through. Myelograms and diskagram are mostly considered the last resort. If nothing is found with them there is very few things for the doctors left to try. Just speaking for my self. After the pain levels I have lived with for almost 6 years I would be willing to repeat any test my doctor thinks that needed to be done again, no matter how painful it was. The test pain most of the time goes away, but the neuropathy pain is there 24/7 and getting worse all the time. I would just about put up with any thing that might give me a chance to be rid of it. Guest guest
Well, you know, sometimes the ones doing the proceedures aren't being careful, either. I have had 2 LP's one wasn't bad, and the 2nd one was attempted in the ER. Attempted 6 times because the doc refused to allow me to get into the fetal position when he couldn't get the needle where he wanted. I told him to quit after the 6th attempt. Guest guest
Hmm. I've found myself wondering about whether mine was so painful because the surgeon is the one who did it. He's used to patients being asleep, I'm sure. I've thought about the problem they were trying to confirm, and that could have done most of it on its own. Then again, mine took like an hour and a half just for the myelogram part, then another hour for the CT. I also truly can't remember, but think I wasn't offered any pain or sedation medication. I usually turned it down back then, so it could be I just said no. I also see that others were allowed to leave after three or four hours. I was there about 90 minutes before being let go. Maybe that's why I got the leak? I wonder because I had two lumbar punctures in years prior and no problems. So many factors enter into it, and it's true that we have many different tales to tell from the same test! Good luck to all, and wishes for lower pain tomorrow! in Oregon > > Well, you know, sometimes the ones doing the proceedures aren't being careful, either. I always remember the name of the radiologist I had as I as for him each time I have my myelograms and he has been wonderful. Good Luck, Kathy. I stayed lying down except for going to the bathroom and the staff insisted that I do this for 24 hours and be sure to contact them if i got a headache to call them immediately. The staff also told me to drink lots of water to flush the dye out, I had pain medications, and even steroid prescription to prevent selling. I am glad they were so insistent on these instructions and the doctor told me in twenty years he never had a spinal leak so hopefully it doesn't happen to him. I think we sometimes forget small procedures are still invasive procedures that have complications. Bennie

The told me this too, but I tried to stubborn it out. I was hoping it was my " regular " headache that just wouldn't let up. By the time my husband made me call, I was too out of it to decide for myself. My end result was that they did manage to free up my nerve, which was the cause of the intractable pain. The surgeon told me upfront that the surgery might not cure my long-term severe neck pain, and he was right. I'm very glad he didn't give me false hope! One thing they mentioned after the myelogram was that the nerve above the one causing so much pain didn't transimit the dye at all. The surgeon said he didn't want to operate on both, fusing me " at such a young age " . Does that make any sense to you? I still have all types of symptoms and pains that could be either neurological or spinal. I still haven't found a doc that can tell me whether it's from the neuro-Lyme infection or whether it's a spinal problem, or something else altogether. They all focus on their specialty and from what I see, a Lyme Specialist tends to blame even ingrown toenails on Lyme. (We don't have Lyme specialists here in Oregon. Not enough cases, I guess.) Anyway, you're a trooper! And I thank you for sharing your trials and victories with us. You're a good source of information and a good motivator!
