Guest guest
Hi All, Back before I had my fusion surgery, and was suffering great bouts of muscle pain and inflammation I was going for therapy three times a week. I was able to obtain a Tens Unit for several hundreds of dollars. It seemed to help as most say, temporarily but it worked. Once I had my surgery, I didn't have the same kind of stiffness, or pain for that matter, and I packed it away. When my pain returned six months after returning to work, I tried everything but I never thought of the Tens Unit again. While ending up in a pain clinics care because the doctors said there was not much they could do for my pain anymore or in the future, I tried all the injections, none worked, radio frequency, didn't work, acupuncture, didn't work. Nothing worked but going back to the meds again which I was tired of after the entire year leading up to my surgery I was in space. Anyway, my pain doc and I were able to get it to what I guess was my lowest levels by meds and I changed my life big time. A few weeks ago, a friend of mine was having shoulder pain. I remembered the TENS for muscle pain and aches so I offered it to him to try. He was kind enough to go out and buy really good stick on pads, something I never had and instead, to save money, I used alcohol wetted pads. The problem was, I had to be lying down to use them. I would lay on the to make contact. Well, today, I had to drive an hour to get my last bit of meds filled and I decided to try it while driving, because it (driving) causes me so much pain. Since they were stick on pads, I was able to put them at the belt line for my lumbar and they stayed there. I set it on and drove for an hour and a half and felt very little pain. This was awesome for me. Of course, as soon as I take them off, it's back. The thing I now wonder is, why didn't they consider putting the stimulator thing in me. It was discussed but never pushed and in fact, they told me if I no longer had leg pain from sciatica, it wouldn't work. Then proceeded to tell me the morphine pump might be for me. I was not crazy about this idea because I had a friends father who had this and he still has to take the meds. What the sense then I say. Well, I had a great deal of relief today for those hours in the car. I wonder if I had an implant, if I could actually get off the meds. Can anybody tell me if there is a limit to how long you can ware these and have it running? Will my body get used to it and stop working. Hmmmmmmmm. I am intrigued truly. While the meds work best, I have those moments where they make me tired and I must take breaks several times a day. Could this be the answer to increasing my activities again? Does anyone have experience with the implantable stimulator and or the Tens Units for long term use? Rich
