Guest guest
Another thought on the child restraint issue - what does law enforcement do when they pull over & ticket a driver with an unrestrained child? Do they just let the driver drive off with the citation and the child still not restrained (and be liable)? Do they hold the driver there until a child seat is obtained (and lose lots of time)? Is this an issue that law enforcement doesn't like to face thus resulting in the low percentage of actual traffic stops for unrestrained children? Is helping out the officers something we need to take on in our injury prevention efforts? You know...state job...lots of free time to ponder questions ; ) ------------------------------ R. Guest guest
... For the other 51 weeks of the year you can contact Regional TxDOT office for PLEASE BE SEATED cards. You fill in the license #, date sighted, time, approximate age of unrestrained children and violations observed. Mail to TxDOT and they will mail a letter to the owner of vehicle stating that violations were observed and had it been a peace officer they would have been fined. They outline the laws and safety concerns for their children. We went a step further..on letters mailed to counties in our RAC they ware referred to CTTC's loaner safety seat program if they need a seat and cannot afford one. We have gone through thousands of these cards. Guest guest
, Let me give some insight. A pet peeve of mine when I was still on the streets was making stops for unrestrained children. The problem that we run into is what to do after telling them to " press hard three copies " is one like you said let them go and pray for no accidents (which I have done) hold them there until a seat arrives, which could be considered unlawful restraint in some legal beagle's eyes or not issue a ticket and arrest the driver. Now what do do with the child, whose mom/dad/sis or whoever is now in cuffs? Thank goodness the majority of the ones that I have stroked had a seat and had a case of the HUBS. After they got their ticket, the child was restrained before driving off. It is a very sticky problem. Would programs like you all are talking about be beneficial, you bet!!!! Maybe this is something we could take to our state reps for grants or monies for state wide distribution. It it's a great band wagon to be on! - Re: unrestrained children hotline Another thought on the child restraint issue - what does law enforcement do when they pull over & ticket a driver with an unrestrained child? Guest guest
Saferiders offers the car safety seat checking courses. It's four days of intensive work on how to inspect and install carseats. We just sent three of our folks through a course in Texarkana. I'm sure we all know the overwhelming amount of children that are in car seats are in them improperly. My thoughts are just giving pera carseat increases liability, unless a trained person can show parents how to install it. Guest guest
Mike...That is the advantage of getting your law enforcement involved and getting officers from various departments certified. We also have certified EMS and firefighters that a non-certified officer can take the parents to for correct installation. It is great to see them become such staunch advocates after attending the four-day course. We sent 12 through last fall and hope to have a course here early 2001. Guest guest
Mike, Do you have a contact number for Saferiders? Sound like it would be a great course and something we can all benefit from. 91b/EMT-B - Re: unrestrained children hotline Saferiders offers the car safety seat checking courses. Guest guest
I don't have their address, but you can get on their website through TDH. I believe that they are not having anymore regularly scheduled classes this year. However, if you can pony up the funds, I'm sure they would come out and do a course.
