Hi All

Something unusual happened recently.

a friend came out to me that she was a transsexual, and had

only had the gender reassignment surgery recently (I have

known her for a couple of years). I had suspected, but when

she said nothing I assumed I was wrong or that she had

already had the surgery - and it came almost a big of

surprise as if i'd never suspected at all.

we're not particularly close, but we get on pretty well. it

does make a difference knowing for certain, so i suppose

i'll have to adjust to knowing.

anyway, she invited me to a party last night and I met her

consultant at the Gender Disorders Clinic. He said that

they are desperate for ppl to study gender disorders, and

that he would be happy to take me as a postgrad if i can

get funding.

Altho the area *is* interesting, i'd never thought in terms

of researching it - perhaps because i'm so mixed up abt my

own sexuality that the area makes me uncomfortable, and

perhaps Serzone, while combatting my depression, is damping

my scientific curiosity! also, in recent years i've become

interested in addiction/codependency stuff. Getting into

*that* area is more difficult. also, i have had thoughts of

trying to get to the US - but I could do that *after* doing

a PhD here. at it happens, the consultant is an american

from UCLA so he would be a good source of contacts.

Another thing is that I had a friend who had transexual

feelings and the distress contributed to his suicide, and i

might like to try to help other ppl not reach that point of

despair. Transexualism has an association with borderline

personality disorder, so there is a link there too.

another funny thing is i got a newsletter from the rehab i

was in a few years ago, inviting me to a reunion. unusually

for private rehabs, they do a lot of research. i *could*

try to get a foot in the door there - but that brings up a

lot of issues, not least that in their terms, I'm " using "

and the rehab is 12-step based - not exactly my cuppa these

days!

anyway, i have a lot of thinking and decision making to do.
