All:

It's 3:30 AM here in Los Angeles and the terror of Tuesday's horrific events

have finally caught up with me. For the past 24 hours I've been in a haze

but able to function normally -- now I am racked with emotion. I am appauled

at man's inhumanity to man and the sad realization of how history often

repeats itself. I remember when I was in high school and we were studying

Nazi Germany and Hitler's regime. I spoke at lengths with my dad about the

atrocities of man and the horrible acts by the Nazi's to the Jews and others.

To this day my dad's words never rang so true, " Don't ever think something

like that couldn't happen here. " At the time it made no sense, because

afterall, we're America, land of the free, home of the brave. We're an

impenetrable nation. Wars are always fought elsewhere. Yesterday those

words hit home. I can't help but think . . . as a nation, we will never be

the same again.

As a child of the 70s I was brought up during the Vietnam era. It was a time

to be anti-war, anti-government, anti-anything. I never felt a sense of

patriotism for my country, well not like the older generation who had been

through World War II. Today I understand that patriotism. I understand the

love of country. I understand the need to defend our right for freedom.

My thoughts are with the families of those who've died and the injured. And

to the firefighters, police, doctors, and volunteers . . . you are truly the

heroes.

And thanks for listening . . .

Silverman
