Guest guest
OK, this has nothing to do with gallbladders, etc, but it does have to do with avoiding surgery, so I thought you might find it interesting. (If not, feel free to tell me, lol.) My teenage son was diagnosed with phimosis. (Difficulty in retracting foreskin.) My doctor sent us to a urologist. Before his appointment, I did some research on the web, and found that there were a few different treatments, one of which was treatment with topical steroids. Some sites recommended circumcision, some did not. I figured that when we went to the urologist, he would tell me about these various treatments. WRONG!!!! He said he should be circumcised. I asked him about other treatments, he knew of none. He said I could seek them out elsewhere, or that I could bring him any information I found, and he would be happy to look it over and discuss it with me. I felt a little bit trapped, because here is this doctor I have never seen before telling me my son needs surgery. My son seems to agree (a teenager will always think a doctor is right over his mom.) I am being placed in the position of having to make an undoable decision about my son's body, about an organ I don't have, so can't totally understand exactly what my son is experiencing, and it's not exactly like a sprained wrist, that he will let me look at. PLUS, this entails general anesthesia, which any parent gets a bit nervous about having their child experience. Anyway, yesterday I called Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital. (I am fortunate to live less than an hour away.) I asked to speak to the urology department, and asked if there were any other treatments for phimosis. The lady was so friendly, took down my question, and said she would get back to me, as the two doctors were in surgery. She called me back a few hours later, and said that the doctors there would treat the problem with...ready.......topical steroids. So I set up an appointment. Today, I am going to cancel the surgical appointment, and tell the doctor about the treatment. Hopefullym he will make time to research it himself. I know this story is totally unrelated to the topic, but I figured that anyone interested in taking responsibility for finding out what else is available besides their doctors first option, might find it interesting. I would also honestly appreciate any insight or opinions anyone might have about this, especially the guys! (lol) My fiance agrees that this is the way to go.
