Guest guest
My question is regarding booster shots I'm suppose to have done for my older boy who is not autistic.... He'll be 6 next week and I've been able to put it off for 1 year, but now since we are returning to the states and he will be entering the school system I must comply I guess.... first of all what is a " titer " I'm totally ignorant of this... is it a test a doctor can perform to see if he needs the booster or not... blood test??? We will be arriving in Massachusetts around the middle of August and he starts school August 28 so I don't have a lot of time.... As always thanks for your help.... Guest guest
Back to " projects with major benefits to the list " : If anyone would like to write up a FAQ about vaccines, how to know which have mercury, how titers work, how exemptions work and where you can get them, etc etc etc, that would be a lovely service to do for everyone, in my opinion. I have saved some answers to questions on these topics, but don't feel qualified to write about it (I just haven't paid close attention) and I know some of you are expert on many aspects. If someone writes it, it can be put in the FILES, and, if appropriate, mailed out to the list periodically. I can help with things like formatting (so that it is easy to access in a browser) etc. Moria p.s. Beth, in addition to " titers " there are also sometimes legal and/or religious exemptions you can get. Please don't do the shots.... Guest guest
Dear Beth, It is a simple blood test you can get at a lab. Just request the childrens doctor run a titers test for the mmr vaccination. We just recently ran the blood test on our son who is 5yrs old. He starts school in the fall. He had enough MMR in his body. These results then are attached to a waiver from the school. Jenifer
Guest guest
Yes, it is a test that checks for immunity. A good idea, rather than getting the shots. Guest guest
A titer test is a blood test in which the body's immunity against the various vaccines is measured. Since the boosters shots are given to get the 5% of kids who didn't get the disease immunity from the first round of vaccines (95% do get the immunity), the chances that your child is already immune and does not require the booster shot is pretty good. I don't know why the doctors don't just routinely test children when they turn 5 for immunity instead of subjecting them to another round of shots, but I suspect it has more to do with money and the pharmacuetical companys than it does with concern for our kids. Any pediatrician should know about having blood titers drawn and should be able to write you an order/draw the blood for the test, I just had my NT son tested (he turned 5 June 21st) and he was immune to all and did not require the boosters. He received a medical exemption based on the tests.
