My son, age 12, in 7th grade, has never been pulled out to work with

TOD, but is pulled out for speech. He is in classes for gifted students

(and gets straight A's) and it is important to me that he not be pulled

out for speech during academic classes-not only because he might miss

something, but, because, I feel he is in school to attend class--speech

is secondary. The speech teacher knows how I feel and works around his

schedule-last year he had speech during study hall and this year he has

it during SSR (silent, sustained reading.) He can miss that without any

problem because he is a very good reader and does plenty of reading on

his own time.

I wouldn't worry too much about what they might miss as far as being

behind in middle school in science or social studies--but still, this is

stuff you want them to get. I would talk to the speech teacher and let

him/her know of your concerns. I don't see why the speech couldn;t

incorporate parts of the science/social studies curriculum.
