Guest guest
My husband and I just got back from the CPSE meeting. This is the committee that transitions toddlers out of early intervention into the school district by age three. In September, when Kara will be three, she will be attending the BOCES program where she will go to school full time, five days a week from 9 to 3. The class will have 20 to 25 hoh/hi kids. The class will be co taught by a TOD and a Speech teacher. There will also be three aids. Also another speech teacher will spend half a day in the class too. This is a new approach to teaching preschool here. There will no longer be any one on one speech. All speech will be done in groups. Now, don't get me wrong, this is a great program. We are very fortunate that Kara is in a full time program for deaf/hoh kids. What I am not so crazy about is no more pull outs for one on one. When I went to the CPSE meeting to discuss the IEP, I asked for a speech teacher to come to the house twice a week. Keep in mind that I requested this from a table of bureaucrats who never met Kara and had no idea that there was such a deaf program in Long Island. When I requested the speech teacher in addition to BOCES, the head bureaucrat shook her head and said absolutely not! Yes, I was ready to jump accross the table and bop her. She said that since there is a program that Kara will go to for 30 hours there is nothing in the law which allows for speech at home. Is this right? Based on the booklets that they give parents, it says nothing like that. I pointed this out to the committee and they said that they needed to clarify the book. Question- I have a three year old attending a deaf/hoh program. There is no one on one speech anymore. Am I elegible under the IEP to get speech in the home too? Any legal eagle out there? Where can I look to confirm the law? Help!!!!!!!!!!! Diane, Kara's mom
Guest guest
Lori I don't know to whom you are addressing your questions, but my deaf daughter was still language delayed at 6 - so I had her in Kinder in the morning to increase the language and the DHH Primary in the afternoon (peer interaction). What I am telling you is to do whatever you're comfortable with, insist on the special ed services that you want, not what the teacher thinks - you're with her longer. Definitely insist on the ESY, it seems they tend to lose a lot over the long summer months. > >Reply-To: Listen-Upegroups >To: Listen Up <Listen-Upegroups> >Subject: IEP Questions >Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 18:39:03 -0700 (PDT) > >Hello All- > >I was just informed by my daughter's teacher that we >have an IEP coming up in May. Guest guest
Hello All- I was just informed by my daughter's teacher that we have an IEP coming up in May. Here is my dilemma. is 3.8 years old and attends a pre-school hadicapped program for dev. delays mainly speech and gross motor. She is hearing impaired (profound in right and normal in left), and she has PVL (this is the cause of her delays). Her teacher feels that she is ready to move to a regular pre-school where the kids have some delays but they aren't classified as special ed. She can still get PT and speech (if needed). The class size can go up to 16. Her current class accepts only 8 per teacher. I want her to attend the extended school year as if she stops, all her therapy stops. I do not feel this would be good for . Her teacher says that she is almost age appropriate at this point. I am not sure that I agree. Because my daughter is delayed and has a late Aug. birthday, I have no intention of sending her to kindergarten at age 5, she is not ready! If I keep her in the handicapped class, she will have to go to kindergarten at 5, is she moves up to the reg pre-school she can stay there until she is 6. I feel as if I am caught between a rock and a hard place. Almost as if I am being railroaded. More than likely I will move my daughter up in the reg preschool. I need some help as to what to put in the IEP in May. Can I receive a one/one aide for her? I have read your posts and I know you are well versed in the IDEA regs. Do you have any advice to offer on this? This is a very big decision and I don't want to do the wrong thing for my little girl as it could have such an impact on her entire school career. HELP... Thank you in advance for your help and sorry this was so long.
