Rhonda,

Nicky is on the diet, and I have had to have him off of it completely twice.

We did try experimenting at one point, taking him off just the gf part or just

off the cf part as well.

This may sound strange, and I don't know why, but when we had him off one or the

other, the only problem we noticed was constipation when he was getting the

casein. However, when he has been off both at once, the change is evident

within hours, complete with tantrums, stims, zone-outs, etc. So, at least in

Nicky's case it seems to have something to do with the combination of the two.

I know it was recommended to me to take him off one first, and then the other,

after at least a week. Maybe if you did the same thing taking him off the diet?

Hope that helps!

gfcf diet

Hey there everyone.. i need some advice here. We are getting ready

to take Tommy off of the diet.. after having him on it for a year and

a half now, and going over all of the documentation we've kept..

we've finally come to the conclusion that its not doing him any

good. Not saying it wasnt worth the try.. because we did learn alot

of DIFFERENT things going on with Tommy through the diet. Anyhow, I

was wondering if anyone on here has tried the diet, and gone off of

it. Im concerned with getting Tommy off of the diet " too fast " and

dont know how to start weaning him off. Im hesitent to post this on

the GFCF website because if any of you are members of that group..

you know how crazy people can get there when you give up on the

diet..lol If any of you could help.. i'd appreciate it! :-)

By the way.. sorry I have been so quiet lately.. we have all been

battling the flu here for the past month.. I was fortunate enough to

get it twice. But all is well now! (thank goodness!)

Rhonda:

Putter was on the GFCF diet for about a year and he went off it. I finally

took him off because it was quite clear one time when he accidentally got

hold of some regular waffles instead of rice waffles that they simply did

not affect him at all.

We did sort of gradually go off it. I have no idea if that is a better way

or not, but we had a lot of food for him to go through that we had already

bought and so it worked well for us. Also, Putter is not at all interested

in dairy products (I have wondered if that was not because he knew that they

bothered him; if you give him ice cream, which he does like, he will take a

couple of small nibbles and then stop as if he knows any more will upset

him, but that is just speculation). My hunch was that the diet was not

going to be an issue for him because we did testing and it seemed to

indicate that he had no problem (whereas every other child in Putter's

psych's practice came out as needing the diet).

Sorry you had the flu -- twice! How awful. Nice to hear from you again.

Hi Rhonda. Sorry to hear the diet didn't help. I thought

about it for , but decided not to, for cost, stress

and sanity reasons. The only thing I am going to try is

yeast-free because a lot of them get yeast infections and

is one of them.

I know that as far as lactose goes (the sugar in dairy

foods) that yoghurt has less. Casein I have no idea! You

might start with small amounts of yoghurt? Good luck.

Thanks so much for responding Salli. Thats exactly where we're at

with Tommy.. he's had a FEW slipups.. but has never shown a reaction

to the gluten.. though, he does show reaction to the casien.. we do

plan on staying casien free... especially after ordering 25 pounds of

his milk..lol Its nice to hear that someone was in the same boat as

us.. I think thats what we are going to do as well.. just use up what

food we have and gradually switch back.

Thanks again for your imput

Rhonda -

You do what you feel is right for your child. Period.

If I were you, I would not load him up right away. I would definitely wean

him. It's just like any other " diet " , in that when you start incorporating

new foods, your system needs a chance to catch up.

Good Luck!!!

Thanks Penny. I've gotten more support here than with anyone I tell

ya! I did end up posting on the gfcfkids site, and i DID get ALOT of

private emails that were very PREACHING type emails. I didnt think

that my email box could hold that many!..lol ANyhow.. there's no

other way to know, unless I just do it.. so tonight is the night. Im

only going to give him a few small things.. He should be the happies

kid on earth tonight..lol

Thank to you all for your support with me on this.. I'll keep you

updated on what happens. And if all goes well, I will have some

Kirkmans to unload on you all!!! :-) (Tommy's been off of the

kirkmans for a week now with nothing negative happening, and some

good comming of it)

I'm really sorry that you had such a hard time. I never did the diet because

we had tested first. I just didn't see the need to go to all the time,

trouble, and waiting to see if nothing would come of it. Though there are

people that it helps. My daughters speech therapist is allergic to the

protein in milk. I had her tested threw the Great Smokies Lab threw my DAN

doctor. You are the mom and as such know what's best.

Hello , There used to be a Biomedical support group held by Beth Vataker at the Broward ARC, it discontinued when she moved to NJ last year so I am not sure if someone else has picked up... but here is another one. I have not attended myself but here is the contact info. Gluten Free / Casein Free (GF/CF) Specific Carbohydrate Support Group Contact Wallitch at Also the GFCF kids Yahoo group, they have tons of knowledge and is a good support group with

loads of GFCF information. In any case,

I understand that there is a support group on this topic that meets monthly at Flamingo Church (I think). If anyone has more info on the schedule of these meetings, please share so that I can get started. Thanks so much!

Yes you are correct Robin, the GFCF support group that was run by

Wallitsch has ended as well, has returned to Wisconsin

and my Biomedical support group has ended as well since I moved back

to NJ. Beth Vataker
