Guest guest
You poor baby, Lilian. What a stressful time on top of the crises the world now faces. Poor Allan, I hope they can keep him pain free as possible! I pray for you and Allan that it's all over soon and with great success. Guest guest
Hi Lilian, I am so very sorry to hear about Allan! I know how hard it is to watch someone you love go through this. I sure wish there was something I could do to help. If I lived nearer I would come and sit with him for awhile so you could have some YOU time. You did the right thing by calling the Care nurse to come so you could sleep. Is there anyone else you could call to be with Allan just every once in awhile so you could do something for yourself? It's so important for you to get rest and try to keep yourself as up as possible. I will certainly keep you both in my prayers dear friend! Guest guest
Lilian, I am so sorry to hear all this. I don't know you at all yet, but I have the feeling we'll be getting to know each other well. My husband is going in for an endescope of the esophogus next Thursday. He has a precancerous condition called Barrett's esophogus. It hasn't been followed like it should (his fault not the docs) and they are now looking for a cancer. The type of cancer he'd have from Barrett's has less than a 10 % survival rate of 1 year. There are no 5 year stats. In other words, you don't live 5 years. He goes in next thursday, then we'll find out just how badly our lives are being turned upside down. Right now he's struggling with bronchitis/pneumonia and last week was having to go through cardiac testing. UGH. This is hard. I'm so sorry you're having to go through it, if you need to vent ... I'm here. Peggikaye
Guest guest
Allan and I saw the oncologist on Tuesday and the news is that he has two types of cancer. The tumour in the lung was a carcinoid tumour (slow growing) and seems to have been removed entirely. Unfortunately he also has adenocarcinoma of the lymph gland in his chest. This is the fast spreading cancer and at the moment we do not know where the primary cancer of this type is. We were advised that 3 of every 5 patients with this type of cancer do not make it to 5 years from diagnosis. I did not have the courage to ask how many made it to 1 year of diagnosis. It is planned that Allan start 20 days of radiotherapy in January, 2002 and in the meantime I have to try and build him up both mentally and physically. He is too ill at present to even consider radiotherapy any earlier. The antibiotics prescribed for the wound infection have caused him to be so nauseous and sick that it has upset his diabetes and we have to do blood sugar monitoring throughout the night as well as through the day. After Saturday, Sunday and Monday night without medications or much sleep (about 4 hours each night in snatches) I spoke to the MacMillan Cancer Care nurse who arranged for someone from Care Watch to come in last night and tonight to wake him for his blood sugar tests to let me get some uninterrupted sleep. I had to call in the doctor again on Wednesday and he said to stop the antibiotics and hopefully once they are out of his system the nausea and vomiting should settle down. The Stemetil prescribed to stop the sickness also started him being sick immediately after taking it so we have stopped that too. Love, hugs and grateful thanks to you all for your prayers and support. Lilian
