Guest guest
>>Is there anyother way to remove the stones without doing the flush?<< You can check with the better hospitals in your area to see if any of them perform lithotripsy. This is not being done yet in a lot of places in the U.S., but it is in a few places. They combine Actigall with a treatment using sound waves (if I remember corectly, someone correct me if I am wrong)to dissolve the stones. I think that this will probably be more widely available a few years down the road. Guest guest
Yes, Lithotripsy is an ultrasonic method of crushing stones into fragments in the manner of 1 or 2 hours. Then a good flushing cleanse will eliminate the smaller fragments. Candidates for this method would be people with under 3 stones in their gb and no stone larger than 2 cm. Also, they must be cholesterol (hard but cholesterol based) stones. Pigmented calcium stones will not be effected by the shock wave treatment. Check with your doctor to see if there is a machine in your area. Also, you will have to have ultrasound to varify if you are a candidate for this procedure. Most doctors don't want to do Lithotripsy for 2 reasons. They feel the stones will just return in 50% of the patients over a 5 year period. Also, they feel the fragments could get lodged in a duct if not flushed out. Since they don't have authority to support a flush, they perscibe medication to desolve the stone fragments over a period that could last a few months to a year. I think if you combine Lithotripsy with an alternate gb flush, you can get out the fragments without using a years worth of slower medication like Actigall. Just a thought. It would be great if these two methods were accepted by the medical field to be used together. The other option is to have a doctor cut into the gb and have them just remove the stones. They don't normally do this because they feel the stones will come back within 5 years and for this reason it is not exceptable surgery. Insurance may not even cover it. Unless you privately pay the doctor to perform this procedure, they will be reluctant to do it. Ask your doctor about it. Laser methods are currently being tested but have not yet been approved. If you only have one, or a couple of stones, in your gb, you should look into alternate methods besides just removing the gb. If your gb is diseased or causing you too much pain and grief, surgery can remove the gb very easily in a one day operation. Pain is relieved instantly, and you can live without your gb. Only 5% of people who have surgery have complications with constipation, diarrihea or other common duct problems. Supplements can also correct any digestive problem after surgery. Good luck with your options, choices, and health.
