Guest guest
Hi everyone, Just wanted the experts opinion on the pill, I have been off the pill for 3 months and I must admit I am a little better,as I also have been using a cream here in Australia similar to Estrace I'm not sure whether it is the cream starting to work or not being on the pill...to refresh your memory I have vestibulitis...Could you let me know your experiences with being on or off the pill. Thanking you in advance for your advice and support... Mum to Danny (13) nds and Jodie (9) ds
Guest guest
The only thing about the pill that I want to mention is that its use apparently is very common in women who get chronic candidiasis. I am post-menopausal and have had candidiasis all my life, but I started taking a form of estrogen and definitely have to watch my sugars more than before. Drat! I was enjoying those occasional deserts! But it wasn't worth the brain fog. Beth
Guest guest
Been on and off the pill several times. Hasn't made any difference (I have vestibulitis, too).
Guest guest
Beth, << The only thing about the pill that I want to mention is that its use apparently is very common in women who get chronic candidiasis. >> The pill is only one risk factor for Chronic Candidiasis. Antibiotic use and Steroid use are other risk factors. It was Antibiotic use that did me in and gave me Chronic Candidiasis. I was told at my last doc appointment that we have now kicked that where it belongs. But I still have to deal with the multitude of food allergies that has left me, along with the Fibro. Fortunately, I have not had a vaginal yeast infection now for 18 months, though I still have to deal with occasional flares of herpes if I eat the wrong food and get my immune system into an uproar. I have learned very fast which foods to avoid! Don't like those flares! Otherwise I have no problems in that area. Now if we could only get the sex drive to kick back into gear, every thing (almost) would be perfect. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I am new to this group but have been reading the posts with great interest because I really don't know what to do about my fibroids. Even though I am older (49 yrs old), the blood tests have shown that I am not ready to begin menopause yet. My bleeding had been heavy so the doctor started me on Loestrin. since the Pill causes fibroids to grow and mine (numerous) have continued to grow since the diagnosis several years ago, I am wondering if I am doing myself more harm than good. Doctor wanted to use the Loestrin to control my bleeding and to a certain extent, it has helped. At least I don't have the heavy bleeding and clotting that I used to have. This is supposed to be low-dose estrogen/progestin combo so would that make a difference? Just wondered whether any one else has used this. I notice that a major concern of others on this site is the preservation of fertility. That is not a worry of mine but I am just trying to avoid major surgery. However, I also understand that even after menopause, the fibroids do not go away.

Guest guest
After menopause fibroids don't go away, but they shrink way up and become soft. My mother had fibroids and after menopause they pretty much went away. The docs don't feel them anymore in check-ups and she has never been bothered by them. She is in her mid 70's. Fibroids often have a period of faster growth right before manopause. The likelyhood that women will go into menopause at about the same time as their mothers is about 80%. One thing you can do is have your thyroid checked out by an endocrinologist. Low thyroid hormone production leads to increased estrogen and prolactin production and low progesterone production. It also causes longer periods with heavy bleeding. Standard T3, T4 and TSH tests for low thyroid given by regular GP's may not detect subclinical (within normal range but too low for a particular incividual) thyroid hormone production. GP's generally lack knowledge of the subtle indications of low thyroid hormone production. The pill also affects the results of the tests. Guest guest
MTang: I was on lo-estrin for 8 years to control heavy bleeding (2-3 weeks), beginning at the age of ~39. Yes, it reduced the bleeding to one week, but over the years my heavy days became much heavier and the cramps became more severe. I am now 47 and, like you, are no longer concerned about fertility. I went off this in Jan, with a shot of depro-provera which caused me to gain 25 pounds (size 8 to 14 pants in just 2 months) and then I bled for a month straight, 2 weeks of hemoraging. I'm now on a higher dose of BCP -- Ogestrel, which has kept the heavy bleeding at bay. I'm NOT happy about the weight gain!! Very discouraging. I'm pursuing options to address the fibroid, and have an appt w/an IR next week to talk about UAE. Good luck to you. mtang51@... wrote: > I am new to this group but have been reading the posts with great interest > because I really don't know what to do about my fibroids. Guest guest
Dear Marilyn, Loestrin didn't work for me at all. I was bleeding constantly. I am now taking aygestrin and it is helping alot. I am bleeding minimally. I am 45 and I too am trying to avoid surgery. It scares me and I don't want to be laid up for several weeks. Good luck to you Anita Re: re: pill > MTang: > > I was on lo-estrin for 8 years to control heavy bleeding (2-3 weeks), beginning at the age of ~39. Guest guest
Dear Marilyn and Anita I am on Loestrin also. It has helped my bleeding somewhat, but not as much as I hoped for. I've had two periods since going on the pill and they were lighter than usual, but I still had some flooding (just not for 24 hours straight!). Clots were still bad. With the pill there is less endometrial buildup to shed, but the fibroids can still cause heavy bleeding because they interfere with the uterus' ability to contract and because they are fed by large networks of blood vessels. I've had complications from a D & C so I'm not sure how much bleeding I can blame on the pill. My doctor has had me on the pill continuously since the D & C so I won't have periods, until just before my myomectomy scheduled for May 15. I still have spotting to light bleeding, but this week has been better! I suspect Loestrin's low levels of estrogen and progestin may be keeping my body hormonally at the point right before my period is supposed to start. Before I was on the pill I was charting my temperature every month. I would always spot or bleed lightly for one day before my temperature actually dropped, unlike the examples in all the books which show the temperature dropping on the first day of bleeding. I know some people have had better results with higher dose pills, but my doctor does not want me exposed to that much estrogen, so I'm just living with the bleeding for now. I will be glad to get off the pill after my myomectomy if it is successful. Therese Re: re: pill Dear Marilyn, Loestrin didn't work for me at all. I was bleeding constantly. Guest guest
Anita, Thank you. My hemoglobin is good, in the 12.7 - 13.4 range. My doctor just wants me to maintain this level before surgery. He also wants me to give two units of my own blood in case I need to be transfused after surgery. I gave one unit last week, and even though my hematocrit was fine, I felt weak and almost passed out just after giving blood and again later at work. I was supposed to give another unit today, but I chickened out. Now I have to reschedule it with Red Cross, and I am going to bring my husband in case I am too weak to drive. I hope everything works out for you and you are able to get a hysteroscopic resection. I wish I could undergo a procedure that doesn't involve a lengthy recovery. I was hoping for a hysteroscopic resection, but the doctor didn't think I was a candidate and recommended further testing which I couldn't have because I was bleeding every day. Oh well. I'm not looking forward to the pain and the recovery period. Good Luck, Therese Re: re: pill Dear Therese, Do you know what your Hemoglobin is? Does your Doctor say he/she wants it at a certain point before the operation. I told my physician that I am interested in a hysteroscopic resection because I have a small submucosal fibroid that is probably the cause of the bleeding and several other small fibroids. I am looking for a procedure that doesn't involve a lengthy recovery. I wish you a successful myomectomy and a speedy recovery. Guest guest
Therese, I nearly passed out after giving blood the first time. Since then, I've consumed large amounts of sugar (fruit juice, mostly) before giving blood and that has really helped. If I remember correctly, the reason we have problems after giving blood is low sugar, which is why the Red Cross had juice and cookies at all their blood drives. Hope this is helpful! - At 10:11 AM 4/30/2001 -0400, you wrote: >Anita, > >Thank you. > >My hemoglobin is good, in the 12.7 - 13.4 range. Guest guest
Thanks, , I think part of the reason I almost passed out was the time of day (7:00 a.m.) and because I had too much fluid in my stomach. I am not a morning person at all. Sometimes I don't feel alert until noon, especially on Monday. I was so worried about giving blood on an empty stomach that I downed 2 cookies and milk at home. At Red Cross my pulse was too high so they had me eat more cookies and drink apple juice to calm me down before giving blood. All that milk and juice made me feel uncomfortable while lying flat on a table for 10 minutes. I am going to give blood again tomorrow evening. The Red Cross people told me to drink a lot of fluid the day before giving blood to make it easier to draw blood from my vein.
