One thing about Stevia is that I could grow my own ;-) I've seen it offered in several seed catalogs. (wsm311@...) Guest guest
yes you can grow your own but indoors except for a short summer stint. Is a tropical plant, think zone 9 at most. Greenly, " Kat That's very interesting. I could do that 'cause I have a greenhouse just off my patio on the south side of the house. I've even grown avocado trees in there. Of course, they only got about 4 ft. tall because I got sick and couldn't take care of anything this past winter. I lost almost all of my plants. Guest guest
you should check out a list called Athena, I think you would enjoy it. If I can find the link I will send it off list. It is, um, rather to extremely woo woo & Very VERY high volume but they have archives & somebody on there grows stevia tho not as far north as you & me. I have experience in not getting stevia to flourish, does that count? Lots n lots of light, moist & warm, I failed on most all counts eventually 8^( Kat -----Original Message----- From: wsm311@... Today I went to a food coo-op a couple of towns over. Here in Vermont most towns either have buyer's co-ops or stores ;-) Outside were a few pots of stevia, so I bought one. Good timing, because this morning we took out the last of the garden seedlings from our 12x48 foot solar greennhouse ;-) It's still a baby stevia, so I think I'll let it grow some more before trying it. Does anybody here have experience growing and harvesting your own? Got any tips? (wsm311@...) Guest guest
Trying to totally eliminate refined sugar, I was about to use a little Stevia occasionally in certain desserts. I am familiar with Agave Syrup but Stevia is new to me. Having bought some, I notice on the Web that it isn't approved by the FDA; is that right and what do they think is potentially harmful (more so than sucrose!) about it? Guest guest
I tell clients it's all about options and personal taste preferences. I encourage clients to give their tastes time to adapt whether less sweet, less salty, or lower fat. I have never tried stevia because I don't sweeten stuff but i guess the off taste is why erythritol is added to purvia and truvia. And sugar is added to sun crystals. Guest guest
I hate the aftertaste but my husband has no problems with it. It totally ruins coffee. Not only that but they have to add a lot of fillers, it is never just stevia alone. Pure stevia must be really bad.
