Police, medics on ride duty

Vance, , Times Record News

Buffed-up golf carts and bicycles will act as ambulances and patrol

cars during today's Hotter'N Hell Hundred ride through Wichita Falls.

Although Wichita Falls Police Department bicycle officers will

share HHH rider's helmets and tight-fitting shorts, they'll supplement their

fashion statements with standard guns and badges.

Lt. Cummings said the bicycle police enjoy a unique position

during HHH in being the most maneuverable officers on patrol - officers who

primarily patrol other cyclists.

" It makes them easier to ride in the downtown area, " he said

Friday. " It's kind of camaraderie for them. They too, being bike officers,

understand how these individuals feel and the efforts they have to put forth to

compete in such a race. "

Besides bicycle officers, golf cart medics from the Wichita Falls

Fire Department will answer any siren cries for health emergencies, department

spokesman Jon Reese said.

" There's a big geographical problem because of an ambulance not

being able to get to these people, " he said Friday. " We're going to be providing

medical teams that will be in the field. "

The firefighters working HHH normally work other shifts. Reese

said a normal number of on-duty firefighters would be ready to respond to any

blazes that could pop up during the ride.

Because firefighters are trained medics, Reese said the event

would be business as usual for the volunteers.

" It's what we do everyday, so it kind of goes hand-in-hand, " he

said.

Likewise, patrol cars won't be phased out for today's ride.

Cummings said about 40 officers would work all weekend to ensure the race

barrels forward without a spoke broken.

" A lot of them will be working the intersections throughout the

city, " he said. " We hope the various people that come in find we're doing the

best we can for them. "

From a safety standpoint, Cummings said officers would also watch

the sky for any bad weather.

" The weather is going to play a part, " he said. " This will

probably live up to its name the way the heat's been lately. "

City and county volunteers play a huge part in the HHH's yearly

success, Executive Director Joe Schaelling said.

" Everybody has a piece to do, and they do it well, " he said. " It

seems to get smoother each year. "
