Denton firefighters pose for charity

Firefighter calendar a first for Denton FD

09/03/2001

By Donna Fielder / Staff Writer

The firefighters were nervous. A little hesitant. Shy.

DRC/Al Key

Denton firefighters Ahrens (left), Hedges

(right) and er (middle) pose for Vickie Jackalone of Jackalone

Photography for a pin-up shot to go with an upcoming firemen's calendar.

They'd rushed into burning buildings. Dangled on ropes from

towers. Wormed their way into tight places and risked their lives almost every

day.

This was the first time, however, they ever posed for cameras

in their bunker pants, red suspenders and bare chests.

" Now I see what those fashion models are talking about, "

firefighter Ahrens said with a groan. " This modeling isn't easy. "

It was all for a good cause. Several Denton firefighters will

appear on a 2002 Denton Firefighters calendar. Proceeds will go to projects from

the Firefighters Association; the Firecats support group and the public

education section of the fire marshal's office.

Organizer Kerri Burnside, president of the Firecats, said the

calendars will cost $10 and will be available in late September.

" We're still working on places they will be for sale, " she

said. " And we're looking for businesses to advertise on the calendars. "

Any merchant interested in sponsoring part of a calendar page

can call Fire Investigator Behrens at .

Candidates were chosen to show a variety of ages, ranks, and,

oh yeah, muscles.

Firefighter Jeb , " A " Shift, fit the bill. Photographer

Vickie Jackalone practically purred as she photographed abs that showed a

perfect " six pack. "

This was his first time at being a sex object, Firefighter

said.

" If that's what I am. "

Capt. Brad Fuller, " A " Shift, posed with his 12-year-old pet

wolf, Shaka. He was a bit reluctant to shed his T-shirt.

" I don't have a six-pack, " he joked. " Mine's more like a keg. "

Other " A " Shift calendar boys are firefighters Brad Imel and

Shane Tackett, and Driver Mike Tucker.

" B " Shift Driver Heath Hudson will show off his muscles in a

weight-lifting scene. Other " B " shift models are firefighter Mike Valentine,

Driver Charlie Schenck, and Captains Randy Nickerson and Ed Tomlin.

" B " Shift firefighter Vince Tooley was uncomfortable

shirtless, working with a wrench at a fireplug, Ms. Burnside said.

" The next day, he had another idea. We photographed him in the

rain, coming out of his bunker gear with the coat halfway off and the pants

undone, " she said. " Somehow, he was more comfortable with that. "

" C " Shift Captain Glenn substituted for a firefighter

with a last-minute case of stage fright. Firefighter Galbraith also will

represent " C " Shift on the calendar.

" C " Shift firefighters er, Ahrens and Driver

Hedges agreed to be photographed only if they could appear together on a

page, they said. They work together at Station 6.

" We haven't eaten in three days, " Mr. Ahrens joked, as they

nervously sucked in their stomachs to look good for the camera.

Ms. Jackalone, a Denton commercial photographer, showed them

on her computer how she could magically erase a little roll above the waist of

one of the other firefighters to enhance his image just a bit.

" Can you add abs? " Firefighter er asked.

The three grabbed Jaws of Life tools and an ax and posed as

though they were working to free an accident victim from a car.

" Ok. Look at me. Smile. Don't squint. Flex your muscles, " Ms.

Jackalone ordered.

They sighed as they relaxed and were told " just one more

time. "

It got hotter in the sunshine, and wielding the heavy

extrication tools became tedious.

" Don't move. Don't breathe. Don't sweat, " Ms. Burnside

ordered.

" Oh please - sweat! " Ms. Jackalone said. " It looks great in

the camera. "
