From Kid-tastrophe to ation: Exploring Loss, Bullying, Friendship, and Students with ASDCarol GrayNovember 5, 2006New York City

Course Description:A student with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may have unique and/or intense emotional/behavioral reactions to setbacks – setbacks that others may view as inconsequential. They need assistance to learn how to handle life’s daily unanticipated twists and turns (loss of a favorite item, a change in routine, etc.), as well as greater setbacks (illness, death, loss of friendship, bullying). Using lecture, PowerPoint®, case examples, and activities, this presentation shares guidelines and strategies to teach a child with ASD more effective responses to the unexpected elements of life.

Faculty:Carol Gray is the President of The Gray Center for Social Learning and Understanding, a non-profit organization serving people with ASD and those working on their behalf. She is an internationally respected author and speaker with over 20 years experience as a teacher and consultant working on behalf of children and adults with ASD. In 1991, Carol developed Social Storiesâ„¢, a strategy used worldwide with children with ASD. She has published several resources and materials related to the education of students with ASD. Most recently, Carol and The Gray Center have been working in collaboration with Mark and the Specialminds Foundation, a non-profit organization, to develop Social Storiesâ„¢ Movies and coordinating materials. Carol is the recipient of the Barbara Lipinski Award for her international contribution to the welfare of people with ASD.

Comments:“Carol Gray is an informative and entertaining presenter and I have learned a great deal about Asperger's syndrome from her intuitive understanding of how a child with Asperger's syndrome thinks and perceives the world. She has an original approach to Asperger's syndrome and Autism that is unique and I have extensively used, in my clinical practice, her strategies such as Social Stories, Comic Strip Conversations, and other ideas. I always enjoy her presentations and thoroughly recommend Carol Gray as one of the world’s leading presenters on Autism and Asperger's syndrome.†– Tony Attwood, Ph.D.
