Guest guest
Hi all...this came across on squish from our Friend in South Africa....Can anyone help her? Hi all Wondering if anyone could offer any advice, experience. My 5 yo Jessy has been on the keto diet for almost a month now. It = was going so well, no seizures at all. A few days ago she started developing a Bronchitis, and has had = fever. I have been keeping it down with Paracetamol supps (permitted on = the diet). Yesterday she had a focal seizure. A really bad and intense = one. The doctor guided us through on the phone. We gave 5mg Valium, = but she did not come out of it. Totally unconscious - eyes wide open, = couldn't blink. I kept trying to close her eyes, but the wouldn't. = Just became more and more bloodshot. The doctor said, after 20 minutes, to give another 5mg Valium, which = we did. Her breathing of course was affected, sats dropped, and her = heart rate increased greatly. We put on the oxygen, and her sats = immediately picked up back into the 90's. =20 She was vomiting a lot, and choking, and we suctioned endlessly. = Needless to say, it felt like a true " struggle for our child's life " , = and were exhausted. After ONE AND A HALF HOURS, the Valium kicked in, = the seizure ended, and she slept. NO-ONE knows what's going on. Between us and the doctor, it could = be so many things. Maybe she hasn't adjusted properly into ketosis yet = - Can it be that it takes some weeks or months for ketones to start = working properly? It could have been because of the high fevers. But once on the keto = diet, shouldn't these type of seizures ALSO be controlled? She is still on quite a high dose of Valproate (Depakote). Could it = be that the ketones are interfering with the ketones, and inducing = seizures? What is anyone else's experiences with Depakote and the keto diet? = Should she be kept on it for a long time? Should she be weaned as = quickly as possible? Could this have been a withdrawal seizure from the = reduction up till now? Could ketones be too high? Too low? I need to know what is happening to my baby. Any help, advice, sharing of experience or info - PLEASE write. Thank you so much, my friends, for your endless support. What would = I do without you?!!! Love Janice (S. Africa)
