Guest guest
Vitamin C " could slow heart failure " Published on: 30-10-2001 Vitamin C could extend the lives of heart failure sufferers by suppressing the " death programme " in blood vessel cells, according to a study. The antioxidant properties of vitamin C may be able to stop blood vessel cells from self-destructing in people with congestive heart failure, say German scientists. Congestive heart failure is a condition where blood vessels malfunction, weakening the heart and restricting blood supply to the body. A " death programme " inside blood vessel cells, which causes them to self-destruct, is thought to cause the condition, according to the researchers. They say that oxidative stress - increased by factors such as smoking and eating fatty foods - can trigger these programmes.
