Guest guest
First I need to apologize; evidently I sent the same post yesterday THREE TIMES!!(blame it on brain fog!)SORRY. Glenn -regarding acetyl-l-Carnitine: I just re-read the following sites and I got inspired all over again. There are so many things " alcar " can do for us MSer's; it sounds amazing. I am also intrigued as it might help my long standing depression. Anyway, I don't know what the Maximum dose is. I will continue research. But the studies listed in the sites below used 2 to 3 grams per day. I would think in divided doses. I did see a note that high doses may cause nausea, but I've been taking 2 grams/day for about 10 days now and I haven't noticed anything. After reading the studies, I think I'm going to increase to 3 grams starting tomorrow. Remember amino acids must be taken on an empty stomach if using therapeutically. Guest guest
Beverly, Thanks. I noticed the same thing in an article where they used up to 3 grams for long durations with no known side effects. I just started taking about 2 grams and will go up to 3 today. I also here uric acid is a potent peroxinite scavenger and b 12 only in the hydroxocobolamin form is a potent nitric oxide (NO) scavenger. Much more potent in a nebulized dose as compared to oral. As for the uric acid, don't know where or how to utilize that unless you want to drink your own pee. (LOL) In a message dated 6/2/2008 11:01:55 P.M. Guest guest
Hello all, I am a newcommer to the group. I have had MS for 15 years, fortunately of benign type. I have been able to manage it using homeopathy, the BBD, supplements, regular exercise and, lately, LDN. I never took any traditional medicals. L-levocarnitine (is it the same as acetyi-l-carnitine?) is the best supplement I have ever tried. I swear by it. I have been using it for one year now - no side effects. Strength and vitality improved. A very good way to increase effectiveness is to increase the grs and the doses/day gradually: the firstweek take 1 gr/day in two doses, the second week take 1gr in 4 doses, the third week take 1 gr in 6 doses, the forth week take 2 gr in 6 doses, the fifth week take 2 gr in 9 doses, the sixth week take 3 gr in 9 doses, the seventh week take 4 gr in 12 doses etc.. I take 2 gr/day, but I know patients with more severe cases who take up to 6 gr/day. Good luck Katerina
Guest guest
Katarina: I was curious, so I looked up Levocarnitine. The following reference claims it is also known as l-carnitine, so I guess it's the same stuff, only taken by prescription. I have been taking 1 gram acetyl-l-carnitine arginate twice daily. When I tried to increase, I did experience nausea, and once actually threw up (all those expensive vitamins, down the drain!) It's better taken on an empty stomach, but I find that if I take 2 spoonfuls of applesauce before I take the carnitine, the nausea is not a problem. I hope it is as effective that way. Beverly GENERIC NAME: LEVOCARNITINE - ORAL (lee-voh-KAR-nih-teen) BRAND NAME(S): Carnitor Medication Uses | How To Use | Side Effects | Precautions | Drug Interactions | Overdose | Notes | Missed Dose | Storage USES: Also known as L-carnitine, this is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative required by the body in energy metabolism and for proper use of fats. This medication is used as a dietary supplement to treat carnitine deficiency. It may also be used in persons with abnormal plasma lipoprotein patterns. If you have serious kidney disease (such as ESRD/dialysis), the intravenous (IV) form of carnitine should be used. The reason is that large doses of carnitine taken by mouth for long periods of time may result in serious side effects (e.g., seizures), interfere with dialysis (increased nitrogen wastes), and cause " fishy odor " to occur. HOW TO USE: Take this medication as directed. Do not skip any doses or take this more often than prescribed. The liquid form may be taken alone or dissolved in a drink. Drink it slowly to prevent stomach upset. Doses should be spaced evenly every 3 to 4 hours as directed. This is best taken with or after meals. Tablets or capsules should be taken at evenly spaced intervals. If stomach upset occurs, take each dose with food. SIDE EFFECTS: This medication is generally well tolerated. It may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach ache, diarrhea, body odor or muscle weakness. If any of these symptoms continues or becomes bothersome, consult your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience: seizures. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. > > Hello all, > I am a newcommer to the group. Guest guest
Hi Beverly, Since you already take 1 gr/day in two doses, I suggest that you should try to make the doses 4 and then 6, before increasing the grs.. What I do is: I dilute my carnitine in a small bottle of water (1/2 lt), I carry it in my bag and drink it little by little throughout the day. I suppose you can use juice instead of water. Hope that helps Katerina
