Guest guest
i don't go by weight because > muscle weighs more than fat. Jenn and all, Just for clarity sake... muscle doesn't weigh more than fat.. a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle... muscle is DENSER than fat.. so its like you took a pound of gold and a pound of feathers... gold is denser. you can weigh more and be thinner in inches if you have more muscle than fat. that's why we need to take measurements and seen inches come off as well as use the scale! I work to much in front of the computer. I did a weigh in yesterday I am down to 192 I am 5 ft. 8 and got married in June at 212 so I feel like I have done well with losing 20 lbs. My newest goal is 185 by the end of this month.Today I did 2 bottles of water 1 can of pop A whole wheat bagel and Grapes and then a low cal. supper today. I was so hungry this afternoon I distracted myself by getting dressed up and going to have my nails done. It worked. I could not wait for supper !! Dawn new to the group hey all, new to the group a little about me, post some about you if you're willing to share name: jennifer (nickname jenn) age: 20 (21 in march) birthdate: 3/12 marital status: engaged to be married 6/21/03 very happy, he has two daughters 10 and 12. we make a great family job/career: customer service us cellular favorite color: green and blue and purple favorite magazines: shape, fitness and cosmopolitan favorite food: grapes and watermelon diet setback: hard candies favorite excersize: walking, and tony littles gazelle machine (airstride jogger) measurements: bust44, waist 36, hips 43, thighs 23, arms triceps 13 weight: 200 height: 5'3 my problem: have been walking or " striding " for 5-6 days a week as well as 100 crunches, 20 pushups and two sets of weights for about two months now and haven't lost anything inch wise. i don't go by weight because muscle weighs more than fat. i drink lots and lots of water. maybe 2 sodas a week. been doing great eating and no sweets. wondering what the problem is. haven't lost anything since july no matter what and in july had lost one inch on waist. thought hey great start to my goal. from january to march had lost three inches off my waist. why am i not losing anymore when i've changed to better eating and have regulary excersized instead of sporatically. any suggestions besides changing routine. this is best for me because i can walk while at work, since i have an odd schedule. if anyone can give me advice i'd like to hear it. my goal was to have a 35 inch waist by the end of this month i've had that goal for three months and haven't reached it, it's only one inch and it's no biggie if i don't reach it but it is my goal. also my other goal was to be a 34 by december since holidays don't set me back. i have little goals to reach by certain months, and i'd love it if i could reach these goals so that they are reached by the time of my wedding. any help would be appreciated. thanks. Have you been measuring your food portions and recording them to figure out how many calories you are eating? It's important to know how much you are eating. Measuring is very important because American packaged and restaurant foods are often several portions. For example, a typical Deli bagel is 4 oz. A diet usually suggests you eat 1 or 2 ounces of grain at breakfast. (For example, many diets suggest 1 oz of cereal-- that's about 1/2 a normal bowlful!) If you need more info on estimating calories, just ask. Do keep walking and striding. You are probably burning 100-300 calories a day that way -- depending on how vigorously you do the exercise. (I have been exercising vigorously since April, and burning 300 calories in a 1/2 hour required very, very intense effort.) The exercise will help-- but exercise alone causes very, very slow weight loss. It won't make you lose any weight at all unless you also control calories. Good luck, Lucia -- lucia@... Guest guest
Hi Dawn, > Welcome , I have a Tony Little Machine so far I have not used it > hardly at all. I wish I would develop an exercise routine. Is there a tv program you think you " shouldn't watch " ? Why not set up the machine in front of the tv and reward yourself permission to watch by exercising while you watch? (I did that for a while....) Don't worry about doing this vigorously especially at first -- just do it! Exercising during tv programs has a double benefit for many people. Often, people are tempted to nibble while watching tv. Well, you can't nibble when you're exercising. (Do put some water near the machine so you can stop and drink 4 oz about every 10-15 minutes. Drink more if you are sweating.) Try to take a 1/2 hour walk at lunch -- it will help you feel better at the computer anyway. Find a willing coworker if you can. The exercise will contribute a small amount to your weight loss rate-- but it is essential for keeping weight off! You need to try to burn that extra 200-300 calories a day to keep weight from creeping back up when you reach your goal. Lucia -- lucia@... It's important to know how much you are eating. i do watch my portions but don't measure. i eat less than i did and eat healthier so that is a change in eating it should help. > > Do keep walking and striding. You are probably burning 100-300 calories a day that way -- depending on how vigorously you do the exercise. i do this at about 4.2 - 4.5 miles an hour, and do get about 300 cal burned in a 1/2 hour. so about 450 a day if i do the full hour, but then i break it into two sessions. one of higher intensity and one of lower intensity. The exercise will help-- but > exercise alone causes very, very slow weight loss. Why not set up the machine in front of the tv and reward yourself permission to watch byexercising while you watch? (I did that for a while....) i agree, this is what i do. i currently work this week only 1-9:30 so i tape the soaps while i'm at work and when i get home i watch them while i'm on the glider, it's nice too because i can ff the commercials. also when i start my new shift next week i will be working 2:30-11 at night so i will be doing the machine while watching the soaps. it keep sme active and i don't feel like a couch potatoe. (Do put some water near the machine so you can stop and > drink 4 oz about every 10-15 minutes. Drink more if you are sweating.) totally great idea. i take water everywhere, in the car, at my desk and when i'm exercising, i drink it all the time. at work i have a mini water cooler where you freeze half and then fill it with water, it looks just like a regular water dispenser in businesses only small enough for my desk, it hold s the recommended 64 oz, but id rink way more than that so i keep a few extra bottles in my drawer. > Try to take a 1/2 hour walk at lunch -- it will help you feel better at the computer anyway. this is good too, i take my little ten minute walks on my breaks but i don't count it as part of my routine, just as a refresher to wake me up and to get away from the glaring computer screen. I temporarily forgot about weight when I said 100-300 cal. I ran 30 minutes at 5.8 mph just now. The treadmill said I burned 290 calories! So, I was thinking of that when I came up with the upper bound. (Not that some people don't run faster....) I did read that many machines overestimate the number of calories burned. Treadmills tend to be fairly accurate because there is lots of data on walking and running. Manufacturers of other equipment tend to be " optimistic " . . ly, I don't believe the elliptic machine at my gym. I'm not even breaking a sweat, and it thinks I burn 12 cal/minute. I'm breathless and sweaty when I run 5.8 mph -- but the treadmill thinks I'm burning just under 10 cal/minute. > > > > The exercise will help-- but >> exercise alone causes very, very slow weight loss. My name is Arlene and I have been " living " for a year. I have lost 25 lbs and counting. Many of us here have the same philosophy as you. I have found that I have problems on the weekends as well, so I allow myself to have my cheat day on Saturday. A cheat day is a day off of my diet in which I usually have ribs from the restaurant. Try to get only healthy foods in the house to help you out so when you crave something, that is what you will grab. Good luck. Guest guest
Welcome back Dawn, I'm sure that is just short term gain. As soon as you get some good activity in I bet it will come right off. Gena > >

Guest guest
Teri Welcome to the group!! I just came back recently so I feel new to the group too. I do remember it being full of support and lots of great info. I hope you come here often. I am going to try to come here as often as I can because I remember it really does help. I just wish I hadn't stopped and gained back the weight but hey there is nothing I can do about it now......except start over. tanya
Guest guest
Hi everyone, I found your group and thought I would give it a try. I have been working on losing weight for a couple of years. I was at my highest weight in May 2001 195 lbs. I was able to get 10 lbs off in a year. Not to good. But better than gaining it. My mom and sister and I joined WW in May 2002. I lost 26 lbs plus the 10 for a total of 36. I have 14 more lbs to go to reach goal. I am determined to get there and stay there. I try to walk everyday for a hour and average 3 miles a day. Thanks for your help and motivation. Judy ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month!
