Well since we have gotten so many new members since I have fisrt hoined

I will tell my story again. I am 30 yrs old, weigh 280 with a bmi of

60. I live in Brelin, NH which is way up in the north country. I have

been thinking about wls since 1995. Since I had no health insurance and

me getting a job revolves arond me eight the forst thing I tried was

voc-rehab. Well they sent me to Social Security. It took me a denial

and appela to get ssi and then about the same fight to get medicaid

since my husband is working. My PCP was invaluble to me during all

this. Then it was getting a referall and getting the consult with the

surgeon.

I am seeing Dr Burchard out of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

There they have a program that you have to completete before you are

scheduled for surgery. 2 of the requirements are that you have to

attend 4 support group meetings and lose 15 lbs. I have done this and

have my second appointment with Dr Burchard on May 31.

Welcome Laurie,

After all, her being a happy well adjusted child is what's important, right?

Sounds like you are dealing with it well. My daughter is 14 mos., she

was diagnosed at 10 mos., and after only a two month trial with hearing aids

(very little progress even though she has some residual hearing) we have

decided to go with the CI. Her surgery date is Aug 23 and we are very

excited; up to this point she has basically heard nothing. We started out

with an ASL program but have decided to go oral after exploring several

options. She also has visual issues and a visual language just didn't seem

to be working.

Best of luck to you, you'll learn a great deal from this group. If you

decide to go with the CI, or are just exploring the idea, you should also

join the CI Circle. It's a list serve like this for parents of children

with, or considering Cochlear Implants. Keep us posted on 's progress!

Hi Folks!

Sorry, I totally forgot that the moderator asked that we introduce

ourselves when we join. I'm Laurie, mother of 1 yo , 7yo Levi and 5yo

Ben. has a profound bilateral hearing loss with no measurable

residual hearing whatsoever. She's had the molds made for her aides this

last week and the audiologist has also ordered an FM system as well. He

does not expect much from either of them because of the lack of res. hrg.

Trying to give us a realistic picture, I guess. She's a wonderful, bright,

and social child and uses her voice very expressively, even though she can't

near future.

We homeschool our children and own a small dairy farm in south-central

New York. My best to you all, Laurie

Hi Barbara,

Welcome to the list. My name is Elaine and my 6 year old son has auditory

neuropathy which in mild cases, can appear like CAPD . They have the same

problems with distinguishing speech in noise but some of the audiological

test results are different. For instance, in CAPD the child has middle ear

muscle reflexes and in auditory neuropathy the reflexes are absent. It is

quite interesting to me the similarities of the two problems.

At one time we had been told that Jake didn't have AN and that there was a

possibility he was just deaf with CAPD, but they were wrong. He does have AN

and not CAPD. AN kids can have " normal " hearing and still not understand

speech with any competing noise. Jake has a severe to profound loss in his

non implanted ear with limited speech recognition skills, but better than

most AN kids with his degree of loss.

Just curious as to what type of testing did they do to diagnose the CAPD and

the hearing loss...... Did they do an ABR, OAE's and middle ear reflexes????

Does she use an FM system at school? Sorry to bombard you with questions.

Hope to hear more from you and that you find the information you need here

(I have no doubts that you will, smile).

Barb,

Hello and welcome to the list. I joined in March after finding out that my

then 10 month old daughter is profoundly deaf. The list is full of great

information, as well as stories of success. You are right, it is easier to

deal with something when you can talk to those with similar experiences.

Your post caught my attention because my daughter , now 15 months old,

was born with catarcts also. She had them in both eyes and had them removed

at 2 months old. She had intraocular lenses implanted at 6 months and they

have truly been miraculous. She wears glasses to make up for her

farsightedness, but the doctors are confident she won't need them in a year

or so. We'll see! She sees better everyday.

got a cochlear implant on Wed Aug. 23 and we are looking forward to her

hookup date, Sept 21.

Best of luck to you!!

Christy, I love your spunk. If you bottel it - let me know I'd like

to be on the buyers list :-)

Our top weight is pretty much the same - mine was 226. The cahrts

tell me 120 would be good - but I'm shooting for 150 to start with.

Good job - great way to start.

Yes I think it is worth it to maintain your ideal weight. After

you get to ideal weight, it is eay to revert back to old habits.

One trick to maintain weight is to lose 5 lbs MORE than your ideal weight

and gain it back gradually.

Another trick is to weigh every day after you get to ideal weight, and

then diet again to lose those 3 lbs.

Yes I gained all my weight back now, but only because I became careless.

Once I kept the weight off for nearly 2 years and felt wonderful. Then

some things happened that caused me stress and I got careless.

We are like alcoholics, it is so important to keep focused every day.

That's such an individual desicion. Maybe this would be a good use

for the virtual model?

That is great that you've kept the wieght off. Are you still having

to follow the low carbs to do it?

Congrads on what you have lost! I am at the same point as you. I have

lost 85 and have been stuck for about 3 months. My trusted chiropractor

says just keep doing what I've been doing and it will get going again.

It will never be as fast as it was in the beginning simply because we

don't weigh as much, it takes longer to burn the cals. A good formula

is take your goal weight, times it by 10: 150x10=1500. That would be

how many cals a day to shoot for to get to your goal weight. It is a

rough estimates. Depending on your activity level you eat more or less.

You may want to try stirring up your exercise routine. The speed,

length, ect. To break a plateau I have found going from fast to slow

and adding some elevation on the treadmill helps.

The important thing is to be healthy. If you are doing the right

things, eating a balanced diet, right portions, exercising, ect the

weight will come off. Just maybe not as fast as we would like. Also my

chiro says after losing a certain percentage your body has to get used

to the new composition, therefore the dreaded plateau. It's not

necessarily a bad thing. It's just your body adjusting. Hope that helps.

i think it's worth all the effort if you lose it to maintain, you

worked that hard to get off and you didn't do it for no reason. the

only thing that you need to do to maintain is stick with the eating

and the excersize, don't go back to the old habits, and you should be

bale to maintain it well. it's just as hard to maintain as it is to

lose except worse because now that you made it you think you can blow

it.

Hello

I'm a new member of this group. This is my third week on the weight watchers

plan, and so far I've lost 6lbs. To date, it hasn't been hard work and I've

enjoyed it. I have 56lbs to lose to get to goal.

I attend weekly WW meetings, but hope to get a lot of additional information

between meetings from this group. I look forward to reading your posts.
