Guest guest
Dear Forum members Re: the news item Stop Selling Condom Through Ration Shops has appeared on the top circulated Tamil language daily newspaper called 'Daily Thanthi' on 30th July 2005. This is supposed to be representation of the President, Commercial Department of Congress, Nagercoil West, sent to the Chief Minister. The argument states that in Kanya Kumari District, it is painful to note that 'Nirodh " (Condoms) are sold through fair price ration shops, where women and school children find difficulty and feel ashamed of visiting the ration shops. Hence he has requested for withdrawing sales of condoms from these ration shops " .... It is true that literacy levels are high in Kanyakumari district of tamil Nadu as per statistics quoted. But is it not in Kerala that two children were discriminated against needing President APJ Kalam to intervene? And Kerala has the distinction of the highest literacy levels in the entire country! But in Tamil Nadu (especially if the news is in the regional language), there is a tendency to trivialize issues by politicizing it. I feel we should not give it more importance than that. Moreover there is only one person, the congress man who has written the letter, which does not essentially reflect the " knowledge " levels of the public. remember, it is not a public protest or a signature campaign to withdraw selling condoms through fair price shops. That then is there. Sreeram E-mail:<setlurs01@...>
