Guest guest
Just wondering if cigarettes or any other type of nicotine products, i.e. snuff, dip, cigars etcs, were bad for afib. I always read the posts discussing alcohol, stress, coffee etc.but rarely do I read about nicotine. thanks
Guest guest
is nicotine bad for afib? > Just wondering if cigarettes or any other type of nicotine products, > i.e. snuff, dip, cigars etcs, were bad for afib. > I always read the posts discussing alcohol, stress, coffee etc.but > rarely do I read about nicotine. > thanks > I don't really think nicotine contributes to AF. I have been a smoker for many years, but at long last I am trying to stop, but for other reasons (down to 5-7 a day and only outside). I have what I presume to be vagal AF. I have noticed that a cigarette does speed my heart rate up a bit (c.10bpm), but I have never noticed it as a trigger. I can also drink coffee too, so long as it is fresh and not instant. So caffeine is obviously not a trigger. I actually think they help to keep my heart rate up. This is an interesting question, and I tend to agree with you that I have not read much about it being either bad for or good for afib. But after working for years in a hospital that featured over 90% users of nicotine products. I have come to the conclusion that it must be some sort of cure for afib. But then the gathering of solid data was clouded by the test group dying of cancer prior to getting a good handle on the afib problem. I hope that you can see my point. 61 OR

Just a note that stimulants can help vagal folk, but just the opposite for adrenergic afibbers. Caffiene is a big trigger for adrenergic afib. I was in at my obgyn's a few days ago, and he mentioned that smoking was a risk factor for cervical cancer. Who would have thought that? If there was ever something to not do, smoking is it. Second is not to be overweight, where I personally fail miserably, but haven't given up trying to reduce.
Guest guest
My brother, who is in permanent afib, believes that his lifelong smoking is one of the reasons he was in permanent afib by the time he was my current age while I am still paroxysmal. He thinks the other main cause of his permanent afib was drinking excessive alcohol. I have never smoked or drunk alcohol and have managed to avoid permanent afib so far after nineteen years of afib. In all other respects, I am virtually a carbon copy of my brother genetically. in sinus in Seattle
