That great Gin & Tonic!

Good Morning Everyone:

There were many summers and many many Memorial Day Weekends that I would sit

back, relax and enjoy a large Gin & Tonic with lots and lots of

ice...........hmmmmm, was that good! I never drank to excess, even in my youth,

but I did enjoy that great Gin & Tonic on a hot day,

This Memorial Day weekend was with family, grandchildren and dogs at my

son-in-law's Dad's home on a beautiful lake in Pinehurst, NC. The kids and our

70lbs German Shepherd (Maggie) love the lake. Maggie dives off the dock - in

and out the water all day long. My 10lb pooch, Logan, follows Maggie wherever

she goes. He was in awe of this great big puddle and although he made several

attempts at the edge of the dock, he just couldn't bring himself to take the

plunge. However, at some point, he fell sideways into the lake; my grandson

pulled this traumatized pup out and that was the end of that - thereafter, he

was just satisfied to watch Maggie from the dock!

Our cookout was delicious; Gin & Tonic was on the menu - but not for me. I came

close on several occasions, but drooled instead, and enjoyed my water with

lemon. All in all, it was a wonderful weekend - and life is good! Hope you

all enjoyed the same.

The following was taken from the Cardiology Forum about the causes of Atrial

Fibrillation.......

" ........consumption of alcohol acts as a toxin on the heart, and patients who

binge drink or chronically drink large amounts of alcohol are at risk for

developing atrial fibrillation. "

Ellen,

I enjoyed your account of your wonderful weekend, especially the part about

the dogs, since I love dogs. Your story points up once again the possibility

of enjoying life and having fun even while denying yourself some of the

simple pleasures other people enjoy with impunity. The gin and tonic would

have been a pleasure, but obviously its absence didn't ruin your weekend.

I plan to show the above quotation to my older brother who is in permanent

afib, because the statement provides documentation for what he has long

believed: that alcohol is the primary cause of his permanent afib. He

believes that alcohol is the reason he was in permanent afib by the time he

was my current age, but I, who have never drunk alcohol, am still paroxysmal

and actually spending less rather than more time in afib lately. He also

recently gave up smoking but realizes that it's too late now to turn back the

advance of afib. He realizes that he should have stopped smoking years ago,

but hopes that it is not too late to preserve the health of his otherwise

structurally sound heart. I bring this up because I think it emphasizes the

element of hope that is so important to all of us. It's never too late to

work at removing triggers from our lives and to hope for improvement.
