Guest guest
Tom, I had another question for you. I found a PT who will work on me. I have a skin condition in which the skin cells are shedding prematurely, but I also feel there is a lot of muscle tension. Would you not recommend trying to treat these both at the same time - I am wondering if the muscle tension is affecting my pain level as well as the skin disease. Also, I am getting really scared about my abdominal psoas muscle. I have a lot of pain with it - it first came on as a horrible burn and then the burn went away and it stayed as a soreness. How do I know if I have inflammation of that muscle- I've been reading about it and am really freaked out. The tests I've had are: abdominal and pelvic CAT scan, upper GI, lower GI. Would these detect the inflammation of that muscle - the results there are normal, but I am really freaked when I read about psoas abscess/psoas inflammation. Thanks, Tom Seema
Guest guest
Hey seema, The abdominal CT scan woud have shown a psoas absess if it was there,. Otherwise it is just a high tone muscle and that can cause back and groin pain. The treatment of the pelvic floor will not hurt the skin problem and will likely open up much needed blood supply as well as decrease nerve preasure. If you can take some over the counter anti inflamatories then try them. If they decreqase the pain then there is llikely and inflamation. Pain is not always and inflamation but with fluid stasis the inflamation can come on. CAn you feel the tight muscle?? if so, gently start to massage it. It will be tender at first but keep gently massaging it back and forth like a guitar string. It should feel better right after the first massage if it is a psoas problem. Psoas msucle get tight from doing old time sit ups and from being stressed alot while sitting too much. Doing accesive bench stepping or stair master can also bring it on as well. Guest guest
Hey Tom, I'm wondering - this pain started 4 months after my vaginal pain. I'm a software engineer, so I basically sit at the computer for about 9 - 10 hours per day. I try to walk a little bit every hour, but usually get busy. Is it possible that I may be sitting awkwardly due to my pelvic pain (maybe shifting forward and I don't realize this) and this strained my psoas. I was also doing the elliptical machine for 3 times a week when this happened - I wonder if this all compounded. I do remember taking an Advil and it did not do a thing. I dfeel the tight muscle in my back - it feels like 2 rocks there. The muscle tightens up worse during my period (not sure why). Is this normal? It is harder to feel the tightness in my abdomen - the alternative doc believes the muscles are just spasming all around that area. Also, I noticed I feel a little bit better when using a heating pad - would this indicate spasming and not necessarily inflammation? So, would I need an MRI to make sure there is no inflammation or could a PT tell if it was that - I am rather sick of the tests!! I guess I've just been treated by so many incompetent docs that I don't believe anything they say - they told me for almost a year that this was my colon and they finally figure out - there's nothing wrong with my colon!! Frustrating. Thanks. Seema > > > Tom, > > I had another question for you. Guest guest
Hi seema, put your fingers jut below you navel and over about one inch, the genlty press in till you find a tight band that is uncomfortable.Stroke it back and fourth like a guitar string and see if it is painfull. Keep strolking untill you can put moer and moer preasure on it till it hardly hurts or maybe even doesnot hurt at all. The see how that feels. Don't be upset if you cannot find it...most Docs and many PTs cant locate it either. The Psoas and the Iliacus do not run through the pelvic floor but the long term sitting can bother it if you are dealing with pain in another area. MRI will not show anything unless it is a psoas absess. Sitting on one cheek or the other for extended periods of time will upset the psoas msucle. Guest guest
Tom, I feel that tight band, but can't seem to relieve it, it feels like it is so deep inside. Also, I feel the tightness even near my waistline - does that same muscle extend to the waist? Thanks for your help. Only thing that I have found helpful is heat for extended periods of time. Guest guest
HI Seema.. Yes, th psoas does cross under the waistline ( depending where you keep your belt) Try this...Lay on your back in front of the couch or a chair. Cross you ankles and place your feet / legs up on the seat of the chair like a space man in position for take off but.... with your ankles crossed and your knees flooped out. Completely relax your belly and legs for 5 minuts or so and then gently and slowely back away from the couch but try not to use your legs / hips. See if you can have someone lift your legs to the floor. This is a very genneral release ( counterstrain) for the hip flexors of which the psoas is one. Just a try...but do it several nights in a row and see if you feel didffferent. Rembember!!! don't lift or move your legs...let someone else try to bring them back to the floor,...pretend you are paralized until you get your legs back to the floor.
