Guest guest
Hi Rita; In Des Moines in the late 40's and early 50's, Judge Ray on told of a City Detective who drank only on new years eve and the following day. However, he would go to a downtown hotel, The Hotel Savery and rent a room. Sometimes drunk he would fire his pistol at the walls or ceiling. He never drank a drop the rest of the year and it was a ritual with him. The Hotel and The Police Department covered it up and let it go for years. However, he eventually threatened a room service clerk who brought him the wrong brand of whiskey. This prompted action from The Police Department and they were simply going to fire him. He did finally quit this bizarre behavior with the aid of a shrink and AA. Nobody looked in his history. His younger brother had went missing in action on Dec 31, 1943 and never returned. He was reliving old times or something like that on the anniversary of the death. However, the manner was inappropriate. The Judge told this story fairly often. The example of course is you don't have to constantly drink to be in trouble with alcohol. I lived in Des Moines and had never heard of the incident, but of course that doesn't mean it didn't happen.
