Guest guest
I was checking the adverse effects of sotalol listed on the Medcape site. I seem to have all the more Frequent ones that are listed. ----- Decreased Sexual ability Drowsiness Insommia, Trouble Sleeping Unusual Tireness Weakness On one hand I hate to complain because I have had no further Afib's. On the other hand I feel that my quality of life is being affected. I plan to call Doc soon and see what he might suggest. I would be interested in what others have experenced in the way adverse effects from other medications and sotalol. Thanks,

Guest guest
Hi, My Dad, age 84, had a decrease in his quality of life while on Sotalol. He is so much better now. He sees the cardiologist in November. God Bless - Bonnie

The effects went away but returned for a couple of months each time my dose was raised. Now on Atenolol 150 m.g., a very healthy dose, I feel fine and can exercise with no problem. Sotalol is a beta blocker also, but with electrophysiological properties. It might just take some time to become adjusted to it. I would give it a chance if it is controlling your afib. in sinus in Seattle (Day 131)
Guest guest
> I would be interested in what others > have experenced in the way adverse effects from other > medications and sotalol. > Thanks, , I spent 4 months on Sotalol. I was extremely tired, had trouble sleeping, was depressed and had swelling in my lower legs. I didn't realize how bad the side affects had become until I had been off the Sotalol for about week. I was amazed at how much better I felt so quickly. Sotalol didn't control my a-fib so it wasn't a difficult choice to try something else. Guest guest
, After much discussion with both my regular cardiologist and my electrophysiologist I started on Amiodarone. I spent 3 days in the hospital to be given a very high loading dose and went home on 800 mgs a day. I spent 3 months on that dose and now it has been lowered to 400 mgs a day and hopefully in another 2 months it will be lowered to 200 mgs. Since Amiodarone is stored in all the tissue in your body it can take a long time for it to get to an effective. I am big gal so proably took longer than for a normal size person. I have been a-fib free for about 60 days now which is the longest run I have had since January. My last episode was 2 days following my father's death so my run might have been longer if not for that event. The only long term side affect I have with the amiodarone is I don't have much of an appetite (which is fine with me). I had some other minors ones for the first month I was on it and then they went away. I know many people don't want amiodarone and I was reluctant too, but I trust my cardiologist to do all the necessary monitoring to keep me safe from the long term side affects. When I have had an epsidoe since on the amiodarone the symptoms have been much less noticeable and I am able to pretty much do what I need, such as go to work. Prior to amiodarone my symptoms could be pretty bad, dizzy, lightheaded, tired, short of breath. Prior to Sotalol I was on Rythmol and had no side affects. It worked quite well for me for a year then I had an episdoe of atrial flutter and landed in the hospital for 3 days and later had a flutter ablation. Unfortunately I went into a-fib during the flutter ablation and none of the drugs or cardioversion attempts would convert me to NSR so they were not able to test the ablation to see if it was successful. I converted on my own during the night in the hospital. After that they did not want to increase the dose of Rythmol as it has a tendency to push you in to atrial flutter, so I was changed to Sotalol. I am somewhat lucky in that I have pretty much always converted to NSR on my own in about 18-24 hours. Only once have I had a longer run of 7 days necessitating a cardioversion that worked for 4 months, that was at the begining of my treatment. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. If you have any other questions I will be happy to try and answer from my experience. Beverly >
