Guest guest
Dear Pepper, I had a Focal Catheter Ablation four years ago. I don't have to take Coumadin. I do take a baby aspirin once a day but more for general health purposes. You probably don't have to worry about cancer. I haven't seen any studies relating A-Fib to cancer. Check with your doctor or other doctors about this. I'm certain they will reassure you on this point. I push my heart quite hard (intensive wind sprint training for the 100 , 200 and 400 meter dashes) and don't have any problems. I'm 61 years old. How do you feel now? What kind of an ablation did you have? The best thing is to get back to your normal life and see what happens. If you feel all right and don't have any palpitations, etc., then consider yourself cured. Act like you're cured. Think like you're cured. I used to check my pulse all the time. I had a special blood pressure monitor hooked up to my computer so that I could monitor myself several times a day. I used a Polar Heart Rate monitor that I wore all day long to keep track of my pulse. A couple of months after my ablation, my doctor told me to put all that stuff away and get on with life. (This isn't to say you shouldn't use something like a Polar Heart Rate monitor when exercising, but you shouldn't let stuff like that rule your life.) Does this make any sense? Best of luck. Guest guest
The thing to keep in mind about an ablation is that it isn't open heart surgery like a bypass operation. Any time you go into a hospital, there is some risk. But it's really small with ablations. The only pain you should feel is a needle prick when they give you a local anesthetic in your groin or maybe some slight bruising there after the procedure. They run a catheter up your vein into your heart and zap the heart tissue that produces the A-Fib signals. You don't feel a thing because your blood vessels and heart don't have any nerve endings. ( I did feel a little warmth and tingling in my right shoulder when I had my ablation over four years ago. They've made tremendous advances in A-Fib ablation procedures since then.) I was awake during the whole procedure. Depending on your temperament and how you feel that day, ask your doctors to stay awake if they give you the choice. For me it was a very memorable experience. I'd say go for it. The risks are low. And you have a really good chance of being free of A-Fib for the rest of your life. I've been symptom free for over four years now. Believe me, it's worth it. It feels so good to be free of A-Fib. Hope this helps. We're praying for you. Guest guest
I was scheduled for an ablation the 29th of Nov. I just got off the phone with my doctor's secretary and she said there was a scheduleing problem with my ablation. They estimate the first part of Feb. now. I wonder if they know what this does to a person ?

Although I understand your frustration with the office staff. But possibly there was an emergency or something that caused the doctor to have to shift his schedule or give preference to someone with something more serious than afib. (As badly as we can feel with afib, it's not like we were having heart blocks, etc.)
Guest guest
Well this is common. Heart rate increases,PVC'S and PAC's It takes up to six months to see if a second PVA is needed. There is also the chance that that the PVA was not needed and a person could have sick sinus syndrom. There is treatment for that. This is my 2nd ablation and no I do not have sick sinus syndrome- but thanks :-) My EP who I have worked with since 1995 and know and regard very well said we will know within 60 days how successful my procedure was and he anticipates probably very successful. I am in NYC and have been to very fine Rhythm Centers- thankfully I had a half dozen within 5 miles of my house to choose from. I am very lucky in that area- Thanks- Ronnie

Hi, Breta, For sure with me stomach problems can cause afib, although I have also noticed a slight tendency in the other direction. My cardio was surprised when I told her that, but then said probably so - she has another patient who has SVT triggered by stomach stuff. Our old friend the vagus nerve, as posted about recently, is the likely culprit.
