My grandson, has Chiari. Upon researching thyroidism I stumbled across the information about the pituitary producing the TSH..... My internist found the problem and sent me to the endocrinologist. I specifically asked her if it could be chiari related as I do have a lot of chiari symptoms, (which I have had all my life.). She said yes it could chiari relatedbe but not in my case because I had a very high TSH level, This meant the pituitary was working well but the reason why the pituitary was producing tooo much THS was because the thyroid was not responding properly Had the thyroid been working properly and the THS levels been severly off it would have been pituitary problems and could have been caused by compression of that area. Guest guest
I am thinking the weight gain is from eating when we get fatigued. The more exhausted we become, our cravings for energy (food) increase. We eat in response to our body seeking more energy. Let me know what you all think. Pat, RN. Guest guest
I think the weight gain is from lack of activity due to pain and fatigue because I've put on weight too about 15 pounds. I use to walk everyday. I still do but not with the vim and vigor I use too. I have a hard time completing my walk but I will continue to so. I definitely am not as active as I use to be. Guest guest
Hi all again, I wanted to add something about weight gain. You gain weight because of the fatigue and pain, so you slow down, and the weight gain, I believe, also causes you more fatigue and pain, slowing you down even more. It is a Catch 22. Think about it for awhile. ACM 1 12mm No surgery 46 years old symptoms returned? > Hello, my name is Wanda . Guest guest
I also believe that the weight gain is due to eating to try to gain energy and decreased activity because of severe fatigue. My thyroid has been checked numerous times and is normal.

Guest guest
O.K., I guess I am going to be the only one to disagree. I know I am tired, and tired of being sick and tired. But my appetitie is not as much as it used to be. Some days it is 4 o'clock and I realize I have not eaten yet. I continue to work my part time job and do as much as I can at home, which some days is zero. I think there is something haywire somewhere in my brain that is affecting my metabolism, as well as everything else chiari related. I am not in denial, only stating the facts for me. In the past 5 yrs, I have gained 15 pounds, but not only have I gained this weight, no matter what I do, it will not come off! Fighting another losing battle. Most days, I am lucky to get in 1200. In five years I have gained 50. Some my own fault, some do to FMS and CFS as well as a chronic hunger, nibbling because of nausea, and eating what tastes good instead of what I should (that part is my fault). > Most days, I am lucky to get in 1200. But I suffer from a type of anxiety attach, more like adrenalin rushes that have no reason to occur. And instead of being able to do something, like run it off, my body pains and fatigue make me feel like I am having a heart attack instead. I am on your side Christy. Guest guest
Christy and Others, When I am having a very bad " spell " I loose my appetite also. I go days without eating anything or an ice cream cone if anything. Solid and/or spicey foods will upset my stomach and even make me have trouble with reflux. I also go for several days without having a bowel movement which is usually then followed by a day or two of diarrhea. I used to think that the pain meds caused this as they do slow peristalsis. I have almost quit taking pain medication as I was developing a tolerance, yet the problem remains the same. I do know that some antidepressants alter your seratonin levels which causes you to feel as if you are hungry all the time. Steroids also increase your appetite as well as add water gain. I have often wondered if the times that I don't have bowel movements if the food is staying in the digestive tract longer alows more absorbtion of the food that I eat. I don't know....? When I was in my late thirties, I buckled down, dieted and excercised and got my weight down to around 130 pounds. I thought I had a handle on weight control and looked forward to a healthy and fit 40. Then I noticed a hard lump in my abdomen, my periods started getting messy, and despite my best efforts, my weight began to climb. Just after my 40th birthday, I got the diagnoses of fibroids and hypothyroidism, so it's hard to say which exactly started me on this downward slide. It didn't help that I'm a stress eater, so old bad habits re-emerged. I've put on a ton of weight (almost 100 pounds) and feel crappy about it. I struggle to recover my old discipline, but have a hard time finding the will to maintain for more than a couple days at a time. :<
