Guest guest
Dear Forum, Much has been done on blood safety. Testing of the donors is the most important tool at our hand. However, economically feasible tests carry the loophole of window period. To eliminate the high risk group, professional donors have been strategically omitted. But in practice, how many are really omitted? The patients' relatives when asked to donate blood, they get the professional donors at times by paying them outside. Hence Behavioral Change Communication amongst the donors is of vital importance. Posters and other IEC materials should be developed and effectively made use of to create the awareness amongst the donors. If the donors start introspecting themselves from the community health interest, there is a hope that they will stop donating the blood irresponsibly. BCC should be planned and implemented in such a way that every donor before donating the blood should ask question to himself, Is My Behavior Safe and Is My Blood Safe to Donate?' Awareness campaigns on large scale for Blood Donors in the necessity of the time. Now the time has come to create awareness amongst the donors, not only to donate the blood but to refrain from donating the blood if the behavior is high risk one. And only donor can say that definitely. More interrogative forms should be developed to get detailed history which will reflect on the medical history and behavioral pattern of donor. This will help us to decide on acceptance or rejection of donor. Such forms are being used by Red Cross Blood Banks in US.
