Guest guest
My daughter also had hyperactive gag reflex - she would gag very often daily - often, on nothing - well, nothing visible - could have been her own saliva. When you consider the fact that it's too small in the skull, causing compression on the core of the human body's wiring, it will inevitably cause any symptom. Hyperactive this .... hypoactive that - some symptoms may be more prevalent (headaches, neck pains), but I wouldn't discount anything. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years, this Chiari thing will be found to be the cause of other illnesses/syndromes, not just CFS or FMS. Just a year ago, not many were talking about people with CFS and FMS really having Chiari. Now we're hearing about various forms of Dysautonomia like POTS, NMH, OI, really having Chiari - let's not forget spinal stenosis. Guest guest
, I seems that everything I have read on Chiari mentions a hypoactive gag reflex. In other words, most Chiari 1 people don't gag as easily as the nonChiari person. This is one of the questions I have always wondered about also. I have had a hyperactive gag reflex all my life. It has lately grown weaker pretty rapidly. Has anyone out there heard of a hypergag reflex instead of the hypogag reflex being related to Chiari? I do know that children with CP(cerebal palsy) tend to have a hypergag reflex and we have to do therapy on them when they are young by repeatedly gagging them over and over to help the reflex to become less hyper so that they may eat solids without gagging. I also used to be on the Gifted Development forum as I have several gifted children, and am homeschooling two of my younger children. They discussed there a problem with the higher gifted kids having a problem with gagging too much. I have no idea if this is a fact, but my two highest IQed daughters had this problem?? If anyone has some good articles or info on this can you please let me know also? Thank you, Debbie

She had none at all. Her syrinx is from C2 down to T10. Three months after decompression, and after the syrinx started to collapse, her gag reflex returned and is normal. Take care, Dave Father of ACM 1, SM, Scoliosis Surgery 10/4/99 Dr. Frim/Chicago
