My 32 m/o has a very bad case of rotavirus according to his ped. He is limp

and weak. I've taken him back to the ped. today and all she says is to let

it take it's course without any intervention. Can anyone tell me what I can

give him to rebuild his strength? He is only eating crackers with soybutter

and drinking water only. He won't take Gatorade or any other drink of that

type and doesn't want juice. I'm frantic..

Perhaps some really diluted juices would be o.k. I wouldn't worry too much, kids

tend to bounce back quicker than you think even when they seem at death's door.

The drug store will have Pedialite (sp?), which is specifically designed for

this use. Gatorade is not a good idea. When he's ready to eat he'll let you

know. Maybe start with a little lightly buttered toast with some jam, or

oatmeal with brown sugar and cream in it. One or two spoonfuls should be

sufficient. Lots of sleep, of course, helps tremendously. As long as he is

drinking enough water not to be dehydrated, don't worry, he'll live! Remember,

he's sick and that's the deal when they are really sick!

Hope this helps (from an experienced mom),

Does he like popsicles? Pedialyte makes a popsicle that you might try. My son

was real sick with the flu last week and would not eat or drink either. I

finally resorted to using a syringe filled with liquid 3 times an hour to keep

him hydrated. It was better than nothing.

Good luck

Hi Sheila, my son had Rotavirus also, he was around 9 years old. We had him

shipped by ambulance to the Children's hospital because he dehydrated so

quickly. It was in 2 hours and he lost consciousness and we could not revive

him. He spent 3 days in the hospital. I think as long as your child is alert,

and taking fluids it will run it's course. Our son went down very quickly. You

might want to check with your local Children's hospital and get a second

opinion. It was very scary and I really feel for you. It took our son 3 weeks

to really spring back. I think it would depend on how ill your child is prior

to this virus. I consider most kids with autism to have many illnesses going

on. Good luck. You can write me privately if you are worried. I will try and

answer your questions. What I do remember is how quickly they can go down hill

so be really alert to this.

Ugh! we had this once years ago - very viscous stuff - I would just keep his

liquids up and really great that he can tolerate the crackers he is naturally

keeping things very bland which is best for his stomach right now - gosh my

little one vomited everything and had cronic dia's for a week it took a while

for his stomach to tolerate anything at all. And keep up the syringe the Dr's

word on this is 10mls every 10minutes is a really good hydration level if he

will tolerate that much - but anything would be good.

Best of luck

Hi,

I have seen that you all know a lot of kids who have had this rotavirus. It sounds really awful! How can I protect from getting it?

Hello,

As far as protecting from getting it, I am not sure there

really is a way. It's a form of the flu. The doc that treated Jaxson

over the weekend said it's the off time right now, normal cases are

during the heavy winter months. I did disinfect ALL of his toys after

getting out of the hospital and can only hope he doesn't get it

again.

Hello,

I agree with Kim, my son Korben had the rotavirus and he was in the hospital for 3 days! You can't protect your kids from it and Korben had it bad but he also has a gi-trac infection on top of the virus! But i hope that doesn't get it! Take care and i hope to get to know all of the new parents!

Yes, my son experienced blood in his stool both times after receiving the

rotavirus. At the time they told me her was just allergic to my breastmilk and

had nothing to do with the vaccine...any truth to this?

my neice had blood in her stool as well - that is how they realized there was

something wrong- besides the screaming pain she was in. I have never heard of

blood in the stool from an allergy to breastmilk...

yes, and when I asked why he cried all the time, they told me he had acid reflux

and told me to give him MAALOX! by medicine dropper. After about two months, I

took him off of it...yeah, I'm slow...and just felt in my heart it wasn't good

for him (this was before I knew all about the adverse effects of vaccines).

Then when I read about Rotateq being taken off of the market a few years ago, I

thought maybe the new vaccine was just as bad and started looking at the

dates...low and behold...how did they confirm she had the intusuception?

MRI/X-ray or something?

Me, neither. I think that's ridiculous--anything to point the finger away from

vaccines, I'd say.
