Guest guest
Hi ! > Well done Tammy! Another birthday buddy for me! That makes two (a > colleague of a friend of mine had her baby on 31 January as well, also > a boy). It was a day to have babies. My OB was on call & delivered the infants of 3 women (including myself) who were all relatively in the same stage of labor, in addition to a c-section when he first arrived on the ward. > Please excuse my ingnorance, but what is a coarctation of the aorta? Adam was thought to have had a congenital heart defect when he had an US at 20 weeks. We went through a fetal echocardiogram & it ruled out what the US tech thought she saw, but they saw some other things that could indicate a problem. After numerous other fetal echocardiograms & a second opinion at another facility, we were told that there may or may not be something there & that we should just have a echocardiogram done after his birth. The coarctation is a kink in the aorta which decreases blood flow to the lower extremities, kidneys, etc. Adam had diminished pulses in his legs at birth & no pulses the next day. He was transferred to another facility (where heart surgery could be performed if needed). They stabilized him on medications to keep the blood flow to his lower extremeties open & did the surgery on Monday. He is doing much better after the surgery - with rosy pink toes & feet!! We feel that we were very lucky that the medical team knew what to expect & could plan accordingly. Supposedly, the most common way this problem is identified is after the infants are sent home & then decompensate within a day or two. Our little one was quite a tough fella through this whole ordeal. Tammy UD
