Ruth,

has had the same problem with pooping up to 15 times a day too, Once

I took him off the Polycose ( sugar added to formula to increase cals) and

the Vit C which can increase BMs he is doing much better. I have also had

the same problem ----when changing his diaper and using a wipe that the poop

keeps coming out. I guess all it takes is just a little stimulation and it

triggers the reflex. I am " assuming " here that the sphincter is a muscle so

it could be effected by the Mito like any other muscle right?

Ruth-

I have a similar type of problem when my dysmotility is bad. Once I can get my

system working better and

get cleaned out, then the problem goes away. In fact I have had to have surgery

to release the tightness

of the sphincter muscle. It might be a case of her intestines being full of

stool, so the sphincter can't

close. Is her stool quite firm. If so, getting it softer might be the answer.

Laurie, I hadn't thought of trying to soften up her stools, because usually

it's so mushy from the carnitine; but now that you mention it, I think she

has had a change in her stools. Hmmmmmm....... It's worth a try. So far

I've used 28 diapers in 2 days. :{

Chrissy, Thanks for the input. It's so nice to know Lexi is not some

abnormal whacked-out baby (although she does have her moments) and that

someone else has gone through this too. I've put in a call to her

pediatrician and am going to ask him about all of this. Maybe a change in

diet or med regimen is in order. Any port in a storm at this

point..........:}

Hi!Perhaps you could ask your doctor on the safest way for your daughter to

bind up her stools alittle. If it doesn't help and she gets very

uncomfortable there are acouple of options. One is not a very nice one but

she could have her sphincter tightened or perhaps a barium bowel follow

through xray. Some kids can stool like this however and I donn't think it

would have anything to do with her mito issues. Is her hypotonia severe or

worsening as it sounds like this stool problem is a new thing for her?Talk

to your doc, he may not be concerned unless she is losing fluids or calories

but it is always better safe than sorry with our mito kids right?Take care

and I hope it works out!

Dear Ruth:

Amy, 22 years old has problems with that muscle not closing all the way. We

have to have her change her underware twice a day. She also has problems

with incontinence. Her overall tone is poor.

Hi ,

I am definately calling her ped today, since we are still in mega-diaper

mode. I'm not sure if she's loosing calories but what a scary thought THAT

is since she hardly takes in anything anyway. I'm kind of in the same

mind-set about maybe doing a barium study to follow up, and will ket you know

what transpires. Thanks again!

Dear ,

Thanks for the encouragement. I am surely in need of it right now, as things

have been a bit tough lately. Lexi's diet has NOT changed, which is what is

puzzling both her doc and me. But we are trying to manage this by playing

around with her medication dosages and just watching how she responds. He's

being really cool about not putting us back in (knows how much I *hate* to be

stuck there), but we are still trying to get things under control. Better

today (Sun), as she's only had 3 so far and it's lunch time now. One diaper

at a time, y'know!!
