we have something like that here but it's called the circuit. it's a

station workout that you take about 5 min at each station. and it's

reasonable. thanks for the reminder, ours just opened and i think i

should go check it out and find out more. since the cold has come i'm

not getting too much exercise outside of throwing freight at work..

I'm not surprised! Wow what a workout - I'm so proud of you look how far

you've come & improved!!!! Hugs to you

lyssa

Today I learned that I should complain more. Since I am doing so

" well, "

my therapist (an occupation made for sadists) added 6 pounds to my ankle and

made me do 300 leg lifts, 100 seated knee raises and 200 standing and using

my walker. I came home and fell into bed and slept for 2 1/2 hours.

Hovering at a weight for 2 weeks is normal Pamela! When you cut out cream

and cheese, how long did you test the removal of each item? You really need

to do it a minimum of one week for each item (2 weeks is better) - because

weight loss is typically irratic, short-term testing can be inconclusive.

Exercise never hurts - but it's one of those YMMV things - some of the most

succesful people are those who don't exercise and I have several women on my

turtles list that exercise an hour or more a day and are still slow losers.

The only way to see if it will work for you is to try it! What you may find

is that the scales may still show slow loss, but your body will shrink even

faster as you replace flabby fat with firm muscle.

Are your ketosticks old, have they gotten damp? They may be defective. If

you aren't in ketosis at all, then you may be having a problem with

something you are eating. Are you eating any protein bars or low carb

products with sugar alcohols (ingredients end with -ol, like malitol) or

glycerine as ingredients? You may be one of the unfortunates who metabolize

those ingredients like carbs - this can dramatically increase the carb

counts of these items! Could be something to look at.

Don't worry - if you stick to the plan the weight WILL come off - it just

likes to torment you a little first ;)

Pamela,

I exercise! I have a treadmill which I walk on semi-regularly ;)

I also signed up for a beginning exercise training program through

asimba.com (real easy stuff, no equipment necessary). I don't think I

would have lost 10 inches from my hips, and 10 inches from my tummy had

I not exercised (how's that for incentive?!). Good luck!

:)

I exercise regularly. I was a big-time couch potato for many years

and had no desire to exercise at all. 5 years ago I started slowly

and am so glad I did. I do 30 mins cardio (bike or walking) 3-4/wk,

30- 45 mins weight training 2-3/wk and yoga 1-2/wk. If I cut back I

notice it, kind of like cheating on the WOE.

You can expect to replace fat w/muscle when you exercise. Muscle is

heavier, so your weight loss will be different, but your body will

shrink in size and firm up, believe me, you will be glad you did.

I'm sure many people here will tell you different things, but this is my own

experience:

One of the reasons I went with this diet in the first place was that they

said exercise was not required, you could eat as much as you wanted, and it

worked. I found that was quite true - at first. No exercise, I ate till I

wasn't hungry, and I lost weight.

But - after I got to a point, I found that despite being in heavy ketosis, I

stopped losing weight, and actually started gaining again. It was at this

point that being on this list made the difference. I started asking

questions, and the answer became obvious - this diet is NOT about unlimited

calories! It permits a lot more than virtually any other diet, but you

still have the calories consumed vs. calories burned equation.

For me, I had only two choices - consume fewer calories, or burn more. I

could have stayed on this diet and continued to lose weight without

exercise - but to do so I would have had to eat less. I didn't want to do

that because I love to eat, so I decided to start exercising.

At that point the weather was getting better, so I rehabilitated my bike and

started riding, but in the early months of last year the winter just didn't

want to let go, there was snow, rain, and just plain cold. So I joined a

gym near work (open 24/7 so I had no excuse), and when the weather got

better I started riding my bike...a lot. It is interesting to note that I

put a speedometer on my bike in 1978 - from 1978 to 1999 I had ridden this

bike a total of 235 miles. In April I found someone throwing away a better

one than the one I was riding (which I kept anyway) - this was a 1962 model;

the one I had was a 1967 but both were the same kind. I put a speedometer

on it and put 125 miles on it by July, including my personal record longest

single ride of 26 miles on July 4th. By that time I had already ridden to

and from work once - 15 miles each way.

At my wife's suggestion (like I really needed any arm-twisting) in mid July

I bought a brand-new Raleigh Retroglide NX Seven, and between July 14 to

December 9th, I rode an additional 509 miles, which included five more rides

to work. In November I garbage-picked still another bike in excellent

condition. This one is currently at work. Between the time I got it and

the time the snow came I put 15 miles on it. This brings my total bike

riding for the year to 649 miles, in addition to working out at the gym.

Now, if someone would have told me a year ago that I would be able to say

this in a year, I would have thought they were crazy. One year ago I had no

desire to exercise, and certainly not to go more than a few blocks by bike.

Spending over $400 for a new bike would have been folly at its worst.

I never thought I would be exercising regularly - and doing it because I

wanted to. But I am. I don't think I would have done it, however, if I

hadn't started this diet in the first place. This diet has done more than

help me lose weight - it has improved my life.

What tapes do you have?

I used to do tae bo and for a while I could see

STOMACH MUSCLES (if you kinda pulled the fat back :)

)...

I am biking at home right now, but when I get to 199 I

am going to start doing tae bo..

The only problem I ever had with it is that it does

get a little boring...but I get bored easily..I think

this is why I like my exercise bike..because I can

watch TV while I'm on it....of course I don't burn 400

calories for 30 minutes on an exercise bike like I do

with Tae Bo...

trade offs *bleah*...maybe I just need to work on my

attention sp---ooh look SHINEY!

Art,

80 lbs ago, I couldn't do it either. I used to huff and puff just carrying

my supplies up 1 flight of stairs. I started out just walking around the

block, slowly and gradually increased distance and speed. I would get

breathy while just standing and talking.

I think we are all " works in progress " and we all have to start somewhere.

I'm in the same boat. When I waited tables through HS and college, I was

very fit! But as soon as I started my career (which requires me to sit

through most of the day), I packed on the pounds. I usually work contract

jobs so I have some flexibility in schedule, but I also have a two year old

which makes it hard to find " free time " . Sometimes I feel bad when I hand

her off to my husband, sister, or someone else to hit the treadmill. Then I

remember that I won't be here for her at all if I don't take care of myself

first.

Anyway, I have been doing 30 minutes every other day. I do a 5 minute

stretch session before and after. I've been doing some basic yoga on alt.

days. My treadmill is in the utility room, so I just go down there and do

it. Sometimes it's before dinner, sometimes just before bed. Usually, I feel

better when I can do it in the morning. It gives me more energy throughout

the day. I also find the little things add up. Instead of calling someone

with a job-related question, walk to their desk. Park at the far end of the

lot. Take the stairs. Remember that if you are having a particularly crazy

day, a little mini-workout at lunch (a brisk walk or some stretching) could

make the rest of the day more tolerable and give you a bit more energy.

Keep up the great work!

Exercise

Just curious what everyone does for exercise? I work in a busy

office and sit at my desk/computer most of the day, and usually put

in a 11-12 hour day, including my commute, so finding the time and

energy to exercise was one of my toughest lifestyle changes. I've

done it, but still feel a little bit guilty when I take a 45 minutes

away from my work to do a workout on the treadmill. It also means I

get home later than ever. But I'm doing it and I love the results.

When I don't have time to exercise at work (I'm a manager and some

days are just TOO crazy) I try to do a workout at home after dinner

while I watch a little TV. I also do about 15 minutes of upper body

exercises lying on the floor using 3 pound weights every night. I'd

love to hear how others work exercise into their routines.

I do 30 minutes of stationary bike almost every day, and several times a

week i do a little weight lifting. i usually went to the gym but then i got

a stationary bike at home for those days like you say that i get home late

and don't have time to go to the gym. and i always read or watch tv and/or

listen to music at the same time, so i even forget i'm doing exercise and i

look at it as my 30 daily minutes of recreative reading.

I get up at 5:30 a.m. so I have time to eat breakfast and drive to the gym

for an hour workup (or on alternate days, mallwalk or neighborhood walk). I

like to do it first thing in the morning when I'm high energy and before

everyday stuff gets in the way. Vicki

Art, keep at it, you're doing great. When I started out I was just

barely able to do 15 minutes at 3.0 and no incline, and I am 45 years

old and only moderately overweight. I was mortified that I'd gotten

into such bad shape. Now I do 30 minutes at 4.0 with the last 5

minutes at 4.5, and it keeps getting easier. This isn't a contest.

The important thing is that you're moving, and you're making progress!
