Hi Ann,

Just adding to Margie's comments.

I also have been " working from home " for the last 7 years. I " went looking "

for work online, and took a VERY part time position as a host on a message

board for very little money a month, but it led to the current work I do- a bit

of " being in the right place at the right time " or " making an opportunity

where none existed before " after meeting the " then VP of a laboratory " on a

message board on _www.Americasdoctor.com_ (http://www.Americasdoctor.com)

which

no longer has their message boards.

So, I truly believe the sky's the limit (or your satellite dish connection

in the sky, as it is in my case).

Consider internet writing. Having a website to draw internet clients.

Selling a service or product you believe in online.

Did my current position happen overnight? Absolutely not. . . it involved a

lot of hard work, negotiating skills, networking skills, computer skills, and

a LOT of learning new things - related to the internet and related to

dietetics!, etc, etc. Would I do it again? You bet! It's been an exciting

journey.

Like Margie, I've learned about holding seminars, internships and webinars

via online and/or telephone. But, that allows you to work with people

nationwide. Like Margie, I've used a computer to computer or computer to phone

connection (like Skype, Yahoo phone, etc) that allowed me to be in foreign

countries sitting by the pool and still working and staying in contact with

clients.

Yahoo phone has allowed me to work with clients in Columbia, Canada,

Australia and the Netherlands, incurring a " phone bill " of just 1 penny/minute!

I've learned about secure faxing that is delivered to my laptop and sent from

my

laptop - this frees me from having " paper " files, which is essential when

traveling. (Have laptop and high speed internet and/or Laptop and cell phone

service, will travel.)

Shoot, I've even been able to fit in an 8 hour day of " work " while my

husband was driving cross-country, enjoying the scenery the entire time.

I spoke on the topic of Telehealth in Disease Management at the Natl. Kidney

Foundation annual last year. Happy to present to your local groups/State

associations on this or similar topic if interested!

Other options would be to write for a living - magazine articles, books,

such opportunities.

There are also various online nutrition counseling options, today. Real

Living Nutrition (_http://www.reallivihttp://www.rhttp_

option, a company run by, and for, RDs.

Another option is to offer a service such as LEAP counseling, where you

don't really ever have to SEE the client in order to help them resolve

their health issues.

It's really entirely up to what you can imagine, Ann!

Incidentally, I was looking in to the same thing and came across this

article from Today's Dietitian:

http://www.todaysdietitian.com/newarchives/tdjune2007pg46.shtml

Jan Patenaude is mentioned in the article. Go Jan!

As a side, I was looking at the 2007 RD salary survey and if I recall

correctly 40% of respondents said they were not employed because they were

staying home caring for family. I'm not sure of 40% of those not working, or

40% of total respondents. It was a mere fluke that I read the report because

I went back to check and couldn't access it.

And when I was looking for that information, I noticed

http://careercoachrd.com/ had some ideas too.

Hi Ann - I've found a great way to work from home, I became a member of Unicity

- a company that distributes clinically proven nutrition supplements. The

fatest growing segment within Unicity is health professionals. It has allowed

me to reduce my out-of-home work hours by 1/3 so far. The nutrition supplement

industry grew in 2007 (while many industries didn't) and since Unicity's

products are safe, healthy and HELPFUL to people it has been a great

opportunity. I recommend it to any RD that is looking to diversify their income

and stay at home more.

Hi RDs,

I get excited to read about what other RDs are doing

at home, too--I had a baby almost 2 years ago, and I

really wanted to stay home with her, so I just begged,

pleaded and convinced people that my nutrition

services were necessary! I find that the general

population is SO interested in nutrition and if you

can market yourself (and be creative) in the right

way, employers will be very interested to bring you

into the company.

My daughter was 6 months old when I stumbled into

Homemade Baby foods in a Target store--I ran into the

sales rep at the store and just asked him if the

company needed a RD. He gave me the direct # for the

CEO, and she hired me almost instantly when I called.

The company needed a RD, but they just didn't have the

time to search for one. I just work as a

consultant/writer for the company, but it is valuable

experience for me and helpful for them.

I also blog for a couple other websites,

www.thetranquilparent.com and

www.greatideasforkids.com, and I just emailed these

editors out of the blue to ask if they wanted some RD

input. Both of them jumped at the opportunity.

Again, if you are willing to be a little aggressive,

creative and flexible, you can find a lot of work from

home.

I also get asked often by moms' clubs, local gyms,

pediatricians' offices if I will do a 30 mins

nutrition talk. If you like public speaking, you could

really market yourself to these types of audiences.

Good luck!! Would love to hear about future

opportunities for you!

Would you like to share ideas about what work can stay-at-home RDs do?

Thank you.

Hmmm, I consult to companies, do web writing, counsel clients, mentor RDs,

market myself, write articles, pitch public presentations (only the

presentation itself isn't done from home), provide webinars and teleconferences

all from " home " - wherever that happens to be. I've telecommuted from

Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas, Aruba and about 10 other stats in

the

past 3 years. - OH, I have friends and relatives that live in great

locations too! ;-)
