Summary: In a study involving elderly (mean: 74 years of age) and young

adults (mean: 24 years of age) given a fish oil supplement (providing

680 mg/d DHA and 320 mg/d EPA) for a period of 3 weeks, plasma levels of

DHA were found to increase 42% more among the elderly subjects, as

compared to young adults, while plasma levels of EPA increased

similarly. Levels of plasma free DHA did not increase in either group.

These results demonstrate the differing effects of omega-3 fatty acid

intake on plasma lipid changes based on age. The authors conclude,

" …healthy aging is accompanied by subtle but significant changes in DHA

incorporation into plasma lipids. "
