Oh, right. And she offers a recipe for strawberry shortcake, made with

Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Another thing that's never found in my home.....

Well, I actually think that Ellie does a great job. She has very good

kitchen skills and I've made many of her recipes--they are wonderful. There's a

halibut recipe with coconut milk that I love. She attractive, healthy looking,

personable and knows what she's talking about. I'm a fan.

There is an RD who is excellent on FN channel. Krieger. I don't know who

her audience is besides me, but obviously she has some followers or would not

still be on. However, for a show to be on a commercial channel it needs to

attract viewers and sponsors.

So instead of turning off a, or any of the other food channel shows such as

Guy's Good Bites, etc, we should watch them to determine what makes them so

popular and then try to replicate the reason why they're popular. Otherwise,

we'll be forever turning off channels and talking to ourselves among ourselves

instead of reaching out to potential public and clients with our popular

messages. Actually I like a bc of her verve for life, and her ability to

make it happen. She is a down to earth realistic persoon who knows how to sell

herself and her message. I don't see anything wrong w her message bc she's not a

dietitian, and is not advocating health and weight loss, just delicious food and

fun making it and selling it.

Let's face it, good nutrition messages will get us nowhere if they're not fun,

easy to understand and popular with the public. If we're boring and dogmatic,

we'll be where we are, forever and ever.

I challenge all of us to replicate a's and other's recipes, make them

delicious, fun, desirable, popular, and low fat and good nutritionally. At least

shows like a's make people want to prepare and eat more than just fast and

junk foods. That's a good start as far as I'm concerned.

Lettuce but not necessarily iceberg, some type of bread, lots of tomatoes most

of the time, mainly in summer bc I refuse to eat the store bought as they're

tasteless. Bacon? I threw away 2 lbs I found in my garage freezer a few weeks

ago bc it was there for over 6 months, so there goes that one. Sour cream? I do

have that. I buy it once ever few weeks, fat free. But I won't eat it, and so

the pt goes bad bc it's only used when my g/son makes tacos or nachos, or my

husband makes baked potatoes which I eat plain w a little butter and garlic. So

no.... I think here and in most of our kitchens they may not be a staple.

Elle Kreiger is a former model that just happens to be an RD. Too gimmicky for

me- too much acting from her that just misses for me. Agree she has some recipes

worth trying. Now if her husband joined her and turned up the charm ( The

Neelys) I think they'd have a better show!

I think that I have most of the ingredients, lettuce of some type is in the

house and spinach, usually have tomatoes, and the sour cream usually is there

which is fat free/low fat, and there is bacon in the freezer, which we have

occassionally like when relatives come, and for things such as 7 layer salad.

Probably most people do have a few of the things, I could't guarantee everything

would be there at one time tho.  What  was she making?

I can't even remember, but scrolling down it was BLTs. I think BLTs are good

but don't eat them myself, however, I find bacon yummy and it's one of my

weaknesses, bc if I keep it in the freezer I know it's there, but it's too much

trouble and takes too long to thaw and cook, so I never have it.

I think many of us turn into food snobs and look down on too many things that in

moderation are OK to eat, and actually impart a good taste to foods. I try to

teach that to the younger RDs as well as to the dietary staff I work with, bc

otherwise we'd be turning out food that tastes like recycled cardboard.

You proved my point. I don't like the Neelys either but look at what sells. I

grew up in Memphis and on BBQ and Neelys happens to be one of the best (plus I'm

partial to Memphis having the best BBQ in the country). Our discussion proves

even more that the Today show segment that Mike Leonard did on FNCE- here was

his chance to show RDs as a promising force and food expert yet he chose to

reinforce that people still don't know what to eat after all the products,

services and marketers showing their stuff there. That is one more reason

consumers aren't looking to us for guidance-they get the quick and dirty from

others-

Thank you,

Nodvin

If I want to learn to cook like the Neelys all I have to do is watch some of our

friends and I have it. I do have to admit that I also like BBQ but not all of it

as I'm not fond of the sweet sauces. I didn't like what I ate in North Carolina

- too sweet and too much sauce. I'm OK w TN but it's been over 10 years since

last there, can't really remember much about it so maybe not memorable? My

favorite is made downtown LA around Brea Blvd, I like the slow cooked, pork

preferably, little or no sauce. Yummm. There's a really well known BBQ place

in Hayward, CA, Everret and , but I don't go there too often although I

travel to the area every month. I do buy the sauce on-line once in a while.

I hate on Good Eats with Alton Brown how they spell dietitian with a

c. Any time a dietitian is interviewed it is usually mispelled. How

annoying

I like the concept of a food sciend show, but cannot stand the presentation by

Alton. He just grates on my nerves. However, when the topic is of interest to me

and an ingredient I know little to nothing about, I just watch it anyway and try

to forget about him and his mannerisms. I hadn't noticed the use of the

alternative and to us incorrect spelling.

I don't know how long it has been since you had Neelys BBQ, but I was there in

September and I have to say it was the worse dining experience of my life.

Maybe they need to come back to Memphis and take care of their business (though

with their success on FN I doubt that they really care).  I won't go into detail

b/c that is not the tone of this thread, but I was very embarrassed for having

taken my out-of-town guest to Neely's for supposedly the " best BBQ in Memphis. "

I much prefer Jim n Nick's.  I know it is a chain, not local,(they are also in

NC and other places) but hey, it is the best!  And, they have coconut cream pie

that is to die for--oops!  should I have said that to a forum of dietitians?

Sure, why not.  I eat it maybe twice a year.  The docs love it when we have

it at our CQI meeting.  It reminds me of the pie I used to eat as a teenager

with my TAB soft drink--don't laugh, think of the calories I saved not drinking

regular

soda.  Enjoy--in moderation!!

That is one more reason

consumers aren't looking to us for guidance-they get the quick and dirty from

others-

Thank you,

Nodvin

Re: Too funny - Cooking with a

ly, you've just proven that taste is a very personal thing, and that nobody

can ever please everybody, no matter who they are or how they do their show. I

detest the Neelys and find them a bit vulgar and obvious with their so called

charm, and their food is just as high in fat as a's; that's one show I won't

waste my time watching. I like Ellie Kreiger's show, think she's professional

and charming, just wish she'd ID herself as an RD. I don't think it matters that

she is a former model, what matters is that she is an RD and can present well on

a cooking show. No gimmicks is good for me, but as I just said, obviously not

for everyone, so here we have something for everyone 24/7 or close to it.

Sorry that you had such a bad experience. I remember Neely's from a long

time ago but there are so many great places- Rendezvous, Interstate,

Corky's, Colletta's and all have their unique style. Where is Jim n Nick's?

Where are some of your local favorites?

I think a few excesses at times aren't bad at all. I'm not a BBQ expert by any

means as I'm not fond of the sauces. I much prefer the slow cooked until the

outside is black and the inside falls apart, with lots of garlic and spices

stuffed inside and a good spicy rub on the outside. But coconut cream pie!!???

I love them, but fresh coconut is the best, no meringue, fresh creme

fraiche........... Now that's to die for. However, I have yet to be able to eat

dessert after eating any meal, let along a BBQ meal.

Too funny - Cooking with a

In the background, while working today, half listening/watching the Food

Channel. " Cooking with a " . . . she's making a " mini BLT appetizer. "

I heard her say: " Pretty much everybody has these foods in their homes at

all times. "

The foods? Iceberg lettuce. Sour cream. Bacon. Fresh tomatoes. Chips

(forget what kind)

Too funny. . . I SURE don't keep those foods on hand in my home! ;-) Do

you?

RE: Cooking with a: Years ago my sister was told not to date ministerial

students because they were out to find what sin was all about so they could

preach against it. I love to watch a and other cooking shows. I learn so

much of what others talk about and watch (sins?) and am able to turn their

comments into the positive! Likewise, my personal library is filled with what I

affectionately call " sin " books. If I do not read them, I don't know what others

are talking about. Reading them, I am able to effectively and knowledgeably

“preach " against.

Someone sent me a clip the other day of a making some sort of

sandwich... It had egg, bacon, cheese and a hamburger, then, guess what she

used for the bun??? KRISPY KREMES! HA! I have to say, I like watching her

show, just to see what kind of ridiculous thing she will make next. :)
