Guest guest
Maybe I got it wrong. Maybe they do more than on line courses. I was offered an MS program once with the opportunity to became a nurse practitioner one time and I went for dietetics instead. No regrets here. But we as dietitians really have no way to increase the ante here since we come in with the whole nine yards the RD/LDN or MS, RD LDN etc with internships, no place to go except specialties and many small hospitals and state agencies simply do not care. I had my chance years ago for a nursing career, so I made my choice then I guess, have to lie in my bed now.... In a message dated 2/20/2011 2:44:11 P.M. Guest guest
Hi , These situations come to mind 1) being at a gathering at a non-RD co-worker's house and her sister asked her if it was okay if she baked cookies because I was there. 2) when working at a hospital and going to the cafeteria for lunch, inevitably someone I had just worked with would be in line next to me, and often more than one person. First they would check out their plate as to what they had just chosen to see if I might approve or disapprove and then all eyes would go to my plate. I guess to see if I was following their nutrition plan. 3) again, when working at the hospital, when I might have had an ice cream or something extra at lunch, it was pretty usual for someone back on the patient care area to comment what I had had for lunch. A misconception that has already been mentioned is not knowing the difference between dietitian and nutritionist. Another misconception that I have found in working in my private practice is that as a dietitian, I will be telling them to eat things they don't like or don't want to eat and to avoid things they do like, won't be able to eat out, etc. rather than an approach that takes their lifestyle into consideration, that provides information and empowers them to make the healthier choices they select. A comment that I bet most of us have heard in one form or another: " If it tastes good, then I know it isn't good for me and I shouldn't eat it. " Another comment, I often hear is fruit is healthy, so juice should be fine -- having no conception of the calories, etc. in large glasses of juice. Another one I have heard lately is since nuts have been promoted as healthy, eating very liberal amounts of nuts and not knowing why they are not losing weight. As I was responding, I kept on thinking of more misconceptions. Will stop for now. Hope your project goes well. Widiss, RD, MFT Registered Dietitian Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist tanyaw@...
