Call your liability insurance company and ask them. Then you need to find out

if FL has licensing. You might need to become licensed there.

Subject: Long Distance Nutrition counseling services

Hello Everyone....

I have had a request to do nutrition counseling via phone/skype from Michigan to

Florida while a MI resident is in FL for the winter. She wants to continue

seeing me in person when she returns home in May but would like to get started

as soon as possible. My questions: I have malpractice insurance, but do I need

" special " or additonal malpractice coverage? Are there state laws that

allow/disallow this type of practice? I know several RD's offer on-line

counseling but I have no information on how they went about getting established.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I agree with that you should call your insurance company and ask.

I do know that Florida licenses dietitians. However, I don't think that

issue pertains here. The purpose of licensure is to protect the safety

of the citizens of the state(s) in which you hold licensure. It sounds

like your client is a Michigan resident and not a Florida resident. So

she would be protected. The caveat is if Michigan statute for

dietitians specifies that consultations must be face to face- so it

would be good to check those statutes.

Whether Florida’s licensure pertains depends upon their law specifies

providing

MNT in Florida and how they define in. Wouldn’t surprise me if they never

thought

of this situation.
