I wondered this myself a few years back and realized some things. When

typing the word " dietitian " in a Word doc it actually spellchecks and

corrects it to " dietician " . If you've used word on your computer don't try

it because once it happened the first time I'm sure you added the correct

spelling to your dictionary so it won't flag again.

Anyway...they are BOTH correct spellings, IF you are just using the word

dietitian. However if referring to the RD credential...it very specifically

(and properly) is spelled with a " t " .

Once I realized that I quit getting so hung up about it. But anyone know

Bill Gates? :-) I think until Word gets corrected it will always be a

problem. It might already have been for all I know.

Would love to know why everyone does not spell our names properly. Is the

dietician spelling British or something? Anyway I agree with all the

discussion here. Have you heard " the fat lady in the kitchen " as a

description of

us...

I was thinking it was time for us to rename ourselves. Diploma Nurses get

a

BS on line and call themselves Nurse Clinicians and get a raise.....and

the praise... You know what we get..... !!!!!!!!!! Hey Dietary....., Call

Dietary.....etc meaning us...

ADA needs to rename us so we can get some respect... Any ideas here.

We are more like practitioners and many of us have master's with

internships....

what are some misconceptions or annoying things people have said to you

over

the years. You can email me privately or answer here.

Some of mine include:

1) The spelling of " Dietician "

2) use of the term " nutritionist " and Dietitian being the same thing

3) You are a dietitian so you must love to cook

4) Shock that dietitians like sweets

Any more????

One job I had a nurse was my boss and when my ID badge came back with the

dreaded " c " I asked my boss to have it changed. She said " It doesn't really

matter " . I remarked would you change it if your badge said LPN instead of

RN - I got it changed. BTW: Spell check on gmail is correct!!!! Thank you

google!!

Good point Ronni!

A start up company I consult with has me on retainer just to edit their

literature. I have such an eagle eye for errors...now *after* something went to

print with a typo, that being one...erghhh.

Would love to know why everyone does not spell our names properly. Is the

dietician spelling British or something? Anyway I agree with all the

discussion here. Have you heard " the fat lady in the kitchen " as a

description of

us...

I was thinking it was time for us to rename ourselves. Diploma Nurses get a

BS on line and call themselves Nurse Clinicians and get a raise.....and

the praise... You know what we get..... !!!!!!!!!! Hey Dietary....., Call

Dietary.....etc meaning us...

ADA needs to rename us so we can get some respect... Any ideas here.

We are more like practitioners and many of us have master's with

internships....

I think this debate came here long ago and someone suggested that ADA prefers

dietitian, with " t " , but if you think about it - the misspell comes from the

spelling of other professions:PhysicianClinicianObstetricianEvery language has

its own rules for professional/work-performers spelling, like

Bank-er/writ(e)-er/plumb-er ect is another group, or those end with *-ist:

Pharmacist/biologist/chemist/analyst (and probably Y instead of I for at least 2

reasons I could think of, one is analysis is with Y....)and of course there are

the exception to the rules: Author/chef so we are the diet-icianbut don't get me

wrong - I spell mine with a T (see below)

I wondered this myself a few years back and realized some things. When

typing the word " dietitian " in a Word doc it actually spellchecks and corrects

it to " dietician " . If you've used word on your computer don't try it because

once it happened the first time I'm sure you added the correct spelling to your

dictionary so it won't flag again.

Anyway...they are BOTH correct spellings, IF you are just using the word

dietitian. However if referring to the RD credential...it very specifically (and

properly) is spelled with a " t " .

Once I realized that I quit getting so hung up about it. But anyone know Bill

Gates? :-) I think until Word gets corrected it will always be a problem. It

might already have been for all I know.

Would love to know why everyone does not spell our names properly. Is the

dietician spelling British or something? Anyway I agree with all the

discussion here. Have you heard " the fat lady in the kitchen " as a description

of

us...

I was thinking it was time for us to rename ourselves. Diploma Nurses get a

BS on line and call themselves Nurse Clinicians and get a raise.....and

the praise... You know what we get..... !!!!!!!!!! Hey Dietary....., Call

Dietary.....etc meaning us...

ADA needs to rename us so we can get some respect... Any ideas here.

We are more like practitioners and many of us have master's with

internships....

I have always voted -t- and I recently placed why I may have preferred it when I

amused myself with this:

Dietitian = mathematitian who likes food.

I had to look up the spelling and it is also found both ways (mathematician is

suggested by google.)

My pet dietitian peeve is milk - everyone assumes that a dietitian likes and

recommends milk and instead I have to clamp down hard on my tongue to keep a lid

on my opinions about milk. People really, really like milk and get defensive

about it if too strong an attitude. And I heard the " why aren't you a doctor " a

lot - I know the main reason why - I had babies instead.

I have heard almost all of these as well.   The worst was when I was training

for a marathon and had just done a ten mile training run.  At the end there was

a little party for someone who was having a b-day, and the host offered me a

piece of her cake.  Another fellow runner told me I should be ashamed for

having it, since I was a dietitian!  Dietitians do eat cake sometimes too!!!

Especially, when they have just run ten miles and are starving!

Working on a " project " - need some ideas for all your years as a Dietitian

-

what are some misconceptions or annoying things people have said to you

over

the years. You can email me privately or answer here.

Some of mine include:

1) The spelling of " Dietician "

2) use of the term " nutritionist " and Dietitian being the same thing

3) You are a dietitian so you must love to cook

4) Shock that dietitians like sweets

Any more????

Think about it, colleagues...

ObstetriCIAN, PediatriCIAN, CliniCIAN...dietiTIAN is the outlyer. It's an

honest mistake. Those with more education than us...use the " c " . We should

stop considering it to be an insult.

And technically it's correct.

How do you think we come across when we have such bugs up our butts (pardon the

French) about one stinking letter?

I had my very first TV segment last week and under my name was the word

" dietiCIAN " . I didn't care!!! I certainly hope the 100,000 people watching

weren't so busy debating whether or not my title was correctly spelled that they

missed what I was taking the time and making the effort to say.

I'm sorry, I just get so frustrated that we get so caught up in (what I

personally feel is) the petty issue of a simple letter that we keep ourselves

down.

I've seen more posts about this than about any peer-reviewed research we could

be sharing that would make all of us better at what we do.

We're better than this!!!

Monika
