Mediation and Conflict Resolution Individual Education Program (IEP) or other special education issues, a good place to start is with a telephone call to the teacher. If a discussion doesn’t alleviate concerns, address a letter to your child’s teacher(s) and the school principal. Briefly and clearly state your concerns, outline what attempts have been made to resolve the issue, and what you would like to see happen. Ask for a meeting or a written response within 10 days. If this doesn’t help resolve the issue, send a letter to the Special Education Director for your district, (along with copies mailed to your child’s teacher's and

the principal). If resolution isn’t met by a meeting, parents or the school district can request Mediation. Mediation is a service provided to parents and public education agencies to assist in resolving disputes related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement of a child, or the provision of a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). The role of the Mediator is to clarify the issues, gather necessary information and explain the mediation process. He or she also determines who may be present

during the mediation, limiting the number of participants to a maximum of three for each party. During the process, the nature of the disagreement is identified and points of agreement will be determined. When an agreement has been reached, the Mediator writes a specific, concise mediation agreement signed by the parties involved. The Mediator will not participate in due process hearings or future legal proceedings Want to know more? We offer over 30 online tutorials on our website.
