Guest guest
Very interested to see what people have to say. I have a 4 year old and 2 year old and they eat HORRIBLY! It breaks this dietitian's heart. Their favorite snacks (and believe me these aren't what I wish they were) Prepackaged chocolate chip muffins (refuse to eat the ones that I baked even though I used a small muffin tin) Granola bars Chips Goldfish I don't have an opinion on the zone bars or the other bar but the nutrigrain bars are just glorified sugar bars. I would definitely not classify them as a " healthy " item. But I guess if you are choosing from that aisle in the grocery store it's better than the chocolate covered bars (of course, the ones my kids eat). Guest guest
I am very interested too! My 4 year old makes terrible choices too! So tough on me, dietitian mom! His favorites are: graham crackers, Ritz Crackers, pretzel Goldfish, chips, and blueberry bars. I do my best not to buy so much of this stuff. However, my son gets some of it at his preschool.  The other day his teacher reported that he ate a whole package of graham crackers at snack time. They do offer healthy stuff with the crackers. He decided that he just wanted the crackers. He barely ate anything for the rest of the day.  If I push only the healthy stuff, his favorites are plain Cheerios, store brand (Trader Joe's) yogurt cups, edamame, carrot sticks, apple slices, and raisins if they are in an individual box (not sure what that is all about) . He will also eat the low sodium pretzels.  I have to add that we are limited because he is very allergic to all nuts, sesame seeds and sesame oils. The bars you mentioned are usually out of the question due to the ingredients. I consider them to be more like candy bars, not a healthy snack.  My 11 month old will eat anything so far, including Playdough.  I am hoping she will not follow in her brother's footsteps.  Subject: RE: Top snacks for kids and your opinion To: rd-usa , SN Date: Thursday, January 27, 2011, 6:16 AM  Very interested to see what people have to say. Guest guest
My child was below the 5th percentile for wt. for all of his life until he became a teen. I also felt like a " bad " mom as a dietitian, however he managed to survive and his health is good even with some " bad " food choices. I have always had fruit, fruit rollups, nuts, whole grain crackers, cheese sticks, and low fat snack chips available as well as the occasional chips, candy bars, soda. One thing I am glad to see is that to this day and they are now adults, they will use a bowl to put their chips in and eat one helping of food at a meal- they learned self control and moderation and I feel like that was a really " good " mom thing to accomplish. Hang in there. ________________________________ From: rd-usa [mailto:rd-usa ] On Behalf Of Gilpin Sent: Thursday, January 27, 2011 8:30 AM To: rd-usa Subject: RE: Top snacks for kids and your opinion I am very interested too! Guest guest
They are basically the same as the jarred food but in a pouch with a screw top. There are a lot of varieties e.g. one fruit, apple, mango, pear and then there are two fruit or three fruit and veggie combos. Veggies are sweet potato, beets, spinach and carrots. A few brands are Happy Tots(organic), Go Go squeeze(available at costco only fruit combos) and Ella's Kitchen(also organic). The boys, 1 yr and almost 3 go through 4-6 pouches a day. It's mainly about the container but at least the older one is getting some veggies every day. ________________________________ To: " rd-usa " <rd-usa > Sent: Thu, January 27, 2011 3:42:35 PM Subject: RE: Top snacks for kids and your opinion What is squeezable apple sauce and what kind of vegetables does it contain? Guest guest
Shelf stable, usually in the baby food area. At Costco they are with the fruits. My young grandsons are being brought up Vegan. The almost 3yr old does not like most vegetables so this squeezable container has been a boon for my daughter. As I previously mentioned it is probably about the package. When he was weaned from breast feeding he was given hemp milk in a bottle, he would drink 6 or 8 4oz bottles a day, when he went to a cup, he refused hemp milk. His 1 yr old brother never took a bottle and is slowly weaning himself off the breast and drinks from a cup. ________________________________ To: rd-usa Sent: Fri, January 28, 2011 11:09:21 AM Subject: Re: Top snacks for kids and your opinion  Madalyn Are these in the canned fruit or refrigerated section of what grocery store? Guest guest
my kids loved apple boats - half an apple, peeled for younger kids and cored with a spoonful of peanut butter in the center. Personal recommendation - I like the Zone bars a lot, nutrient content and flavor/texture, I'm not familiar with Z bars. Nutrigrain bars are kind of soft, dry and bland to me, but more toddler friendly texture then a Zone protein bar - fairly chewy granola bar texture. Guest guest
what about Cliff Bars, Lara Bars, Kind Bars? When my children were small, their friends all knew that snack time in our home was not cookies and chocolate milk. " time for a protein snack " would be heard...celery stuffed with peanut butter, apples dipped in peanut butter, cheese toast (a lower fat version of grilled cheese) and a glass of 1%milk. ________________________________ To: rd-usa Sent: Fri, January 28, 2011 9:53:05 PM Subject: Re: Top snacks for kids and your opinion  my kids loved apple boats - half an apple, peeled for younger kids and cored with a spoonful of peanut butter in the center. Guest guest
I like Cliff bars, but they are a little more " health-foody " in texture/taste sometimes then the Zone bars. Some of the Cliff bar types are kind of like an oatmeal patty with no leavening, tasty but not universally appealing. I haven't bought many Lara Bars, I think they are a little lower protein, more regular granola bar nutrient content except they are based on fruit and nut trail mix combos - I think I preferred to spend my money on the Trail mix before it's stuck together in a bar form. I am unfamiliar with Kind bars. I made muffins and other quick breads regularly. A lot of healthy 'trail mix' can hide in a muffin (a few I used: grated carrot, currants or gold raisins, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, ginger and pumpkin pie spices, 1/2 cup pumpkin or sweet potato puree or 1 cup applesauce swapped out for equivalent amount of the milk/liquid). Guest guest
Just interjecting a concept brought to my attention from our pediatric dentist. She told me........ " kids eat way to many carbs. Especially in the car. Moms always give kids cheerios and fish crackers and their teeth bathe in glucose all day long. I see more cavities then ever. " She encourages only: apples, cheese, carrots or other veggies and water bottles in the car. I thought of her statement as I read the many processed carb snack items listed in this thread. Guest guest
We were told lots of juice, partly because the simple sugars coat the teeth and some of the acids in juice can do damage. My son is a huge carbo. lover and has perfect teeth. We do serve more water, milk, and limit juices to about 1 cup per day as much as we can. Guest guest
Hello! I hope you are still interested in opinions. My 4 year old daughter eats most snacks given to her (except nutrigrain bars-she won't touch them). She'll eat graham crackers, goldfish, yogurt, etc. All the common snacks most kids eat. However, give her fruits and vegetables, and she'll forget about anything else. I asked her what her 3 favorite snacks are and she said " apples, oranges, and grapes. Apples are anytime snacks, right? "  She then went and grabbed an apple! My 17 month old prefers fruits and veggies, too.  However, I know they wouldn't turn down a cookie! As for the Z bars and zone protein bars, I don't have an opinion, but it's not something I have ever considered. Hope this helps. In good health, RD, LD ________________________________ To: rd-usa Sent: Thu, January 27, 2011 10:30:18 AM Subject: RE: Top snacks for kids and your opinion  I am very interested too! Guest guest
My kids prefer any kind of dry cat food for snacks. They get canned food as it is better for them, but I keep some dry on hand for treats. It is in an ice cream bucket with a snap on lid and Louie will pull the lid off using his teeth. He is very determined and previously figured out how to unscrew lids of containers to get to the dry treats. Maddie prefers any kind of Fancy Feast or canned food with lots of gravy. Guest guest
Ha! This is so funny, . Thanks for the good laugh. So…. I have various types of snax for “my kids” – on the top of the list is WORMS, big fat super mealworms. Sprinkled with calcium. My husband’s kid on the other hand will eat anything she can get out of the box or bag by herself but she’ll take it from your hand also. If the trash can lid isn’t firmly secured, she scavenges for anything edible. But she’s satisfied with just a few bones and ¾ of dry kibble if she can’t get anything else. She expects at least one treat after a 3 mile walk, and enjoys a nice swim even in 40 degrees and when raining (well, being a member of the Polar Bear Club and having enough hair and fat on her she doesn’t even notice what temperature it is). Need we go on? I also feed wildlife, but some, as the cranes and egrets are rude and help themselves to fresh fish whenever they fly by. The coyotes on the other hand, lurk around even in broad daylight hoping the electricity fails so that they can jump an unsuspecting chicken. Hope nobody minds, but in the late hour I’ve really appreciated ’s sense of humor and great laugh after a hard day and long commute.
