Dave,

I didn't realize an Accuchek with Voice Mate was even 600 dollars, but for

a firm to charge Medicare (M e d i c a r e ) almost fourteen hundred dollars

is outlandish. You might want to bring this to the attention of a newspaper

for public exposure, but also keep trying to reach Medicare concerning this

issue. We often get denied benefits because of budget cuts, so this kind of

gouging does not help matters.

Under the law Medicare is responsible for paying service providers with the

usual and customary fee. The usual and customary fee is determined by how

much one can maximally charge and get away with it. After all you are just

spending som body else's money, not yours. Believe me when I say, the

doctors and providers of medical services are not losing any money. They

are just bitching about the extra help they have to pay to help process the

paper work. In the mean time they are getting all they can. So, don't

complain; you are just a simple tax payer.

Don't complain, Meddacare only pays 80 percent.

you figure, what is 20 percent of 1400 dollars.

Barely enough money to pay for the extra help to process the paperwork.

Don't tell me you were under the impression the doctor was supposed to pay

for this additional cost?

My problem with the inflated price Medicare pays is that money could help

more people instead of just being excess profit. Heck, I need chemical

exfoliation treatment for pre-cancerous bumps on my scalp but guess what --

Medicare no longer pays for them, for some stupid reason. Probably trying to

cut costs. Yet they can pay these ripoff prices? It makes me VERY concerned.

Harry,

Of course doctors can't possibly afford to pay for help to do paperwork.

They can't even pay for postage when you send referral info that they must

mail back. My God they're all running on a shoestring budget.

Dave,

This is exactly the reason equipment and other things for the

handicapped is exorbitant.

What you have described is called Medicare fraud. It boggles my mind

that such things are not dealt with in a swift and decisive manner. Oh

well, we are talking about the Medicare/Medicaid miasma and nothing

about them is decisive.

This is also the reason J.C. Penney has a wheelchair in their catalog

for around $600 and a place specializing in equipment for the

handicapped charges well over $3,000 for essentially the same thing.

This is also why JAWS and other screen readers cost nearly $1,000. An

OCR program for the handicapped is not far behind that figure but Text

Cloner Pro is around $100.

Purveyors of items for the handicapped keep holding up the " limited

market " sign but I think Harry has it right, it is what they can charge

and get by with it.

Anyway, I will pass along what my father always told me when I pointed

out inequities, " Son, there is never a road so long that it does not

turn. "

The one thing Dad didn't say is that you may run out of gas before you

get to the turn.

Cy and Harry,

I do wonder though how we got the spelling " m e d d a c a r e " here

though....it's always been M e d i c a r e " as far back as I can remember.

It's probably a symptom of phonetic spelling. I see it all the time in

e-mailing with sighted as well as blind people so we can't just say it's

because of people using JAWS, but it's definitely a growing problem....

I wish there was a way to make these various agencies wholly accountable for

the excessive charges on handicapped equipment and services. The thinking is

that most of the purchases will be through government agencies which are so

mired with paperwork anyway that nobody takes the time to shop prices. Until

this changes, we're going to continue to see this kind of disparity, whether

it's with wheelchairs, diabetic equipment or CCTV equipment for the

partially sighted. It galls me that year after year these companies cry

" limited market " to justify their supreme prices, and at the same time

charge even higher to rehab agencies as long as they can do it, and year

after year nothing gets done to stop this abuse. If we ever see real change,

more people WHO REALLY NEED these things will be able to afford them.
