Guest guest
ly, I'm rather tired of this sort of incendiary reporting. Remember, the press also reported on the now infamous Bachman comment that the US was spending billions on the President's trip to India. If you haven't heard, that wasn't the truth either. It's very easy to blame those who don't have a voice, isn't it? I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of those receiving aid are not off vacationing on your dollar. BTW, there have been pilot tests of drug testing for aid recipients. Guess what? The rates were no higher than rates in the general public. It's sort of not Constitutional, according to some who believe in the right to privacy. Mind you, when I was in the Army, the right to privacy did not apply and so yes, I was subject to random drug testing. It's expensive to do right. Since the current atmosphere is to cut funding rather than spend more, who is going to volunteer to pay for drug testing? Guest guest
Pam, I agree. this saddens me. Where would we stop? I could argue that mortgage deductions are a government program for the middle class. I think we need to look at the bank records, the vacations, and drug test everyone who takes a mortgage deduction. I just want to make sure that people really deserve that and they aren't wasting my money ;-) Debra > > ly, I'm rather tired of this sort of incendiary reporting. > Remember, the press also reported on the now infamous Bachman > comment that the US was spending billions on the President's trip to > India. Guest guest
I didn't realize that SNAP could be used beyond state lines...I know WIC vouchers/cards can't. Guest guest
I don't mean to speak for Jan but not all recipients are " poor me " people either. There is fraud in every entitlement program and I feel Jan was just pointing out how the program can be abused. Fraud busters and/or programs needs to be in place in every entitlement program. I feel if someone can smoke they can afford to take that money and spend on food and housing and care for their children. In our local hospital they are refusing to hire any new employees who smoke. > > > Colorado Welfare dollars are being withdrawn at ATMs in Hawaii, Las Vegas > casinos (including between 10 pm and 6 am), Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, > etc, etc. > > Just reported on the noon news (Channel 7) today. > > Hmmm, shelter, clothing and child care. . . 2.3 million in CO Welfare > dollars withdrawn at ATMs outside of Colorado! > > I'd assume the fraud is as great in other states. Guest guest
Perhaps we should verify that before further spreading incorrect information. On the other hand, I used to live maybe 5 minutes from a state border. Prices were lower across the border. Should we limit the ability of recipients to actually save money? It's very easy to jump on an issue, blame someone (usually, blame falls on those who are less educated, less affluent, and less erudite) and come up with a facile solution. It's much harder to actually solve the problem using critical thinking and making sure that the voices that need to be heard are actually heard. Guest guest
I know the issue about smoking will not change but at the same time where does responsibility lay? Quit smoking and taking drugs/alcohol to care for your children or raise my taxes to do it? ETHICS tells us the children always come first. When I worked in WIC I do realize that most were great parents but there are still that minority that leave me shaking my head for a solution. The problem arises writing all the details in a law truly needed for all the differences BUT that would be impossible. So someone will always be upset about certain people getting assistance. I guess where are my rights regarding paying taxes for all this?? Guest guest
It wasn't that long ago that my debit card was used to bet on a horse or a football team in jolly old England. Living in Alaska made for interesting research on where this debit came from. If it can be done it will be hacked. It may not be the recipients that are gaining from this but someone else. Welfare abuse has been around as long as welfare. Will we be able to stop it, most likely not, just plug the new loop holes at they appear. Guest guest
Cigarets should not be paid for by SNAP or other government aid money! And no, I wouldn't care if the walefare person is buyng cigarets as long as they dont do so with my (AKA tax) money,AS for Obama trip - it wasn't completely un-true, she had all the security and airfare paid by our money, which I could agree that she needs a vocation, but I didn't think it was appropriate for her to have such a luxurious one when everybody are tightening their belts!as for the coverage by the media - really..that's the best defense? that the media is over- doing and lying when it is exposing the gov but when it is supporting of it, it is all true? I don't think so. I think a great intervention is required when welfare $$ is used for vacation in Hawaii or any vacation, even in the neighboring state. I am not paying tax for the poor to go on vacation when I cannot afford one! I am here to pay the poor to support their families BASIC NEEDS, nothing more! This is outrageous! and it should be further investigated not just dismissed with " this is the media " . Guest guest
either way its a fraud, and should be investigated and not assumed welfare money being hacked right away. There might be something to it and if so - there should be something done for better protection of these cards to protect against hacking/identity theft. and what if you found out that the welfare cards where sold for cash and that's how it was " hacked " ? Guest guest
Merav, I think you might have the India trip, for which the costs were vastly, immensely and ginormously inflated by those with less than correct knowledge, with the vacation the First Lady took in Spain. It is the responsibility of the press to report facts; that means checking on what's going on when someone forwards figures that are so outside the realm of rational discussion. Travel by the President's family is and has been for some time, paid for by the American public. For the Spanish vacation, the First Lady took Air Force 2. I guess it wasn't being used that day....... The President's family is also provided Secret Service coverage while traveling, so yes, some of the trip was paid for by the American public. I suppose you can ask your representatives to cut that, but don't think you'll get too far b/c most of them dream of becoming President and so don't want to cut their possibility of traveling on your dime. During the Spanish trip, other costs were borne by the First Family. Chances are there were some folks who might have assisted. Remember also that while the First Lady is not elected, she does have a tremendous impact on issues. Every First Lady that I can remember has had an " issue of choice " . There's press coverage and public interest no matter where they do. Always has been. Do I think she might have chosen a perhaps " American " place to visit? Sure. But she didn't ask me. I haven't asked for the full accounting, but I guess we could request that information that is part of the public record. So, since you would like for us all to have similar abilities to vacation, are you in reality advocating for a socialist state? We can't have it both ways! Guest guest
On a more positive note about the poor...My father volunteers at a soup kithchen run by a local charity on a weekly basis. He told me that at the end of the month is when they have a full house and when they run out of food to serve. He told me this is when the welfare/food stamp money run out and people are going hungry. Many of the poor are too ashamed to show up all the time. They only come when they truly need the meals. They could come all the time and use the welfare money for something else, but they do not. Sure fraud and waste is bad in any form and I wish it could be stopped. We should not jump to blame those who are most vulerable. How are these welfare recipients finding the cash to fly to these exotic locations? We are financially stable and are unable to afford tickets to exotic locals. Tickets just to visit family can be above $1000 for us. It is probably someone hacking into the system. They may be even doing it outside the country. Guest guest
Pam,YOu got me wrong, and I am sorry if it was me who did not state things well enough.I did refer to the Spain trip and not to India,. Obama did not join the trip to India, but even if my memory does not serve me well, the trip to India was not a vacation.Again, I completely support the need of the first family for full Secret SErvice coverage wherever they are 24/7/365, vacation or not!. BUT - what I didn't like about the Spain trip is that Spain, and specifically Palma De-Mallorca is a VERY expensive location. At the time that we are all struggling to afloat, she should not take such a vacation, regardless of the fact that she paid for it, it just had bad taste to it. Just for comparison - First Lady Bush, while in the house, took ALL her vacation in the US! WHy M. Obama could not do the same and give the money to local hotel or vacation resorts? I have no problem, with my money paying for the Secret Service as I would like her, as my First Lady, to be safe and not an easy target for terrorism. I come from Israel and terrorism and security are things that I need no explanation for. SO again, the only problem I had with her vacation is the expensive location. Not to mention, as a mother, I felt bad for the older daughter,Malia, to stay behind in a camp while her younger sister got to meet a real King and Queen (but that's for the Obamas to deal with in house, not my problem, at the dinner table, and maybe Malia wanted camp, though I am not sure I know ANY teenager girl who would not want to meet a real king/queen).So I hope I am clear now.As for Obama " issue of choice " I thought it was Obesity and if you look at the older daughter's, Malia, recent photo she appears a bit too skinny to my professional eye, maybe bc mommy was talking too much about children obesity and her daughter's " issue " with wt...? while I cannot recall one single photo that Malia (or Sasha, for that matter) looks even one bit overwt to me. And no, I do not think we should ALL have the same abilities for vacation. ANd I am very much OK with the rich vacationing in Aspen, while I am staying at home, they did not ask me to pay for it and since they make their own $$, they should choose how to spend it. I am not even jealous, I am happy for them and don't feel that they owe me ANYTHING bc they got better job/worked harder/had better luck/better opportunities whatever you want to call you - good for them and I am very happy for them. BUT, I don't ask you or Trump to pay for mine, did I? So if someone cry " poor me " and I pay for their welfare, I better not find them on the Hawian beach spending MY money! Guest guest
, WHile it is very sad that people are more in need at the end of the month and I am well aware we have a lot of poverty and hunger in the US. During my grad years we had to study one research in Statistics class about families struggle with hunger in NYC, my home town. I read the article and cried, never finished it. the mothers interviewed there said they are sending the kids to friends' house for play dates and purposely coming late to pick them up knowing they will get dinner. So, I know what you mean by " positive note " but I wish it was more pink then that. As for affording the vacations - as someone here said it before - there are many who are on welfare who shouldn't, but they know how to play the system. Another way - get a credit card and charge it, never pay for it. But you dont need to be on welfare to do that, it is just wrong, plain theft. But I don't think that's the issue in the article discussed here, that would not be a welfare $$$ spent. so as I said before - I would like to see further investigation. Guest guest
I am just tired of reading so many threads that are so negative about the poor. Fraud and taxes are always going to be apart of life. I live in one of the most expensive and wasteful states in the nation, so I am no stranger to paying very high taxes, and not seeing a whole lot become of it. Guest guest
Absolutely,I am with you. I don't think all poor ppl abuse the system, but I work for a city hospital and I see a lot of it too, a lot of " I am entitled " instead of " thank you " . so there are all kinds and I am all for supporting the poor, and I agree - abuse is everywhere to this extant or the other, but we should strive to do everything possible to eliminate it to minimum. I would love to hear more details, and yes, I would love to hear it is all fiction, but I believe this is also too good to be true. It does not stop me from continuing giving to charities, bc I know the $$$ is mostly used for good, but would like to know everything is done to prevent the bad. It just doesn't do it for me. There has got to be more to the story. > > > > > > > > Subject: RE: Welfare Recepients withdrawing > money in vacation/exotic locations > > > To: " rd-usa " <rd-usa > > > > Date: Tuesday, February 15, 2011, 3:22 PM > > > > > > either way its a fraud, and should be investigated and > not > > > assumed welfare money being hacked right away. Guest guest
I can't believe we are having ANOTHER discussion about this. We all know where everyone stands by now on social/political issues. Let's remember that smoking and drinking and drugs are all addictions.... and they are very hard to beat. Sure, people should not have started in the first place, but I'm guessing a lot of time life is stressful and perhaps they turn to something like that. We can't even agree to provide the poor food and healthcare, let alone rehab/mental health services. Also, the first lady and her children didn't run for political office. There is no justification to begrudge them their vacation trips, no matter where they are going. They would have had travel and security paid by us irregardless and rightfully so. I'm sure a trip to Spain is a wonderful educational opportunity for her children to see how other people live. Just because other presidents chose to go to Camp or their ranch, it shouldn't matter, period. Family should be off limits. They paid their way for everything else. Mandatory drug testing. Is it REALLY worth it? Think about the money spent to pay for the tests and to hire people (OH NO, more government workers) to administer and process this testing and follow up on the whole thing. Talk about bureaucracy!! Sure, the government says they are only looking for drugs, but imagine what else they can glean from one's urine? Can we be absolutely sure they are only testing for drugs? And if the food stamp dollars get parents that are using drugs, food for their children rather than starving, then I'm okay with that.... > > Absolutely,I am with you. I don't think all poor ppl abuse the system, but > I work for a city hospital and I see a lot of it too, a lot of " I am > entitled " instead of " thank you " . so there are all kinds and I am all for > supporting the poor, and I agree - abuse is everywhere to this extant or the > other, but we should strive to do everything possible to eliminate it to > minimum.
