First RD Elected to Congress ADA Issues

Just another example of how ADA Issue Management uses our ideas. I sent them my

first idea to find a MD RD to be an ADA spokesperson and they got Dr.

Gerbstadt MD RD LD immediately. Then I suggested Registered Dietitian Day and

two years later we finally got our " Day " . My next idea was to help get an RD

elected to Congress and here it is. My last idea was to have the RD General as

an Assistant to the Surgeon General after all the Surgeon General has Assistants

so why not our RD General. Wouldn't it be nice.....LOL. So send your ideas

The first dietitian is elected to Congress

This year’s election has established many milestones for our country. One

significant milestone is the election of the first dietitian to the U.S.

Congress. Kathy Dahlkemper (D-PA) beat the odds with 52 percent of the vote and

defeated Rep. Phil English (R-PA) for the 3rd Congressional seat in

Pennsylvania, representing Erie. English had served in that seat for seven

terms and was known for winning close races. Kathy, a political newcomer,

decided to run for Congress because she wanted to make America better for her

five children and her community.

In early 2008, Kathy came to ADAPAC to ask for our support in her race. In

April, ADA staff met with her and was impressed with what they heard. In

September, ADAPAC hosted a successful fundraiser for Kathy in Washington, D.C.,

and introduced her to leaders in the Democratic Party. It was attended by many

dietitians and dietetic interns in addition to current members of Congress.

In a conversation with Kathy’s campaign manager, she thanked ADA for all of the

support it had given to the campaign. She was especially touched by the number

of dietitians across the country that contacted Kathy to give their support.
